This role leads engineering governance, ensures compliance with UK grid standards, and manages the delivery of technically robust LV, MV and HV grid connection designs. The position plays a critical role in supporting the successful development and delivery of renewable and storage projects across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Authority & Governance
- Act as the company’s technical authority for UK grid projects.
- Own and maintain compliance with:
- ENA G81
- ENA G99 / G100
- DNO / IDNO specifications
- NGESO requirements
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, procedures and best practice.
- Lead technical assurance and sign-off of all designs prior to submission.
- Support achievement and maintenance of NERS ICP accreditation.
- Engineering & Design Leadership
- Lead and oversee the design of:
- Adoptable and private LV networks
- MV/HV grid connections (11kV–132kV and up to 400kV where applicable)
- Substations, switching stations and contestable/non-contestable works
- Ensure delivery of high-quality engineering outputs including:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Protection and control schemes (G99 compliant)
- Earthing design (ENA EREC S34, BS EN 50522)
- Cable calculations and routing
- Review and approve internal and external designs.
- Prepare technical specifications for procurement aligned with DNO/TSO standards.
- Collaborate with Procurement, Delivery and suppliers on equipment selection.
- Support tender teams with BOQs/BOMs.
- Grid Connections & Power System Studies
- Lead G99 applications (Stages 1–3) and associated studies.
- Interface directly with DNOs, IDNOs and NGESO on submissions and approvals.
- Ensure compliance with connection agreements and Grid Code requirements.
- Support power system studies including load flow, fault level and protection coordination.
- Team Leadership & Capability Development
- Lead, manage and mentor a team of design engineers and CAD specialists.
- Allocate resources across projects to meet programme requirements.
- Develop team capability in UK standards, protection systems and grid compliance.
- Conduct technical reviews, competency development and performance management.
- Project Delivery Support
- Provide technical leadership during:
- Tendering and bid development
- Value engineering and optioneering
- Construction and commissioning
- Work closely with Project Managers to ensure designs are:
- Buildable
- Cost-effective
- Delivered on schedule
- Resolve complex technical issues and site queries.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations 2015 and Safety by Design principles.
- Act as Design Authority where required.
- Lead hazard identification and design risk assessments.
- Ensure adherence to QA systems and audit requirements.
- Stakeholder & Client Engagement
- Act as the primary technical interface for:
- Clients, developers and investors
- DNOs and IDNOs
- EPC contractors and consultants
- Lead technical meetings, design reviews and approval discussions.
- Provide clear and authoritative technical guidance internally and externally.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Extensive experience within a UK ICP, DNO or power engineering consultancy.
- Strong knowledge of:
- ENA G81
- ENA G99 / G100
- UK DNO/IDNO/TSO design and adoption processes
- Proven experience delivering LV/MV/HV grid connection designs (11kV–400kV).
- Experience leading and managing engineering or design teams.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership.
- Experience in BESS, Solar PV, Wind or hybrid renewable projects.
- Familiarity with power system modelling tools (DIgSILENT, ETAP, IPSA).
- Knowledge of NGESO Grid Code and transmission connections.
