About hyperexponential (hx): At hyperexponential, we're building the AI-powered platform that enables the world's most critical decisions in a 7 trillion industry. Our platform brings together data, AI, and human expertise to give insurers the fastest path from submission to decision.

About the Platform team: Platform at hx builds the foundation that enables engineering teams to ship secure, scalable applications at velocity. We're evolving towards an AI-first platform where self-service infrastructure, intelligent automation, and reusable components compound developer productivity and operational excellence.

As the Staff Platform Engineer, you will own the technical direction of this evolution. You will define the architecture and engineering standards that others build to, drive coherence across teams, and ensure the platform strategy is aligned to long-term business outcomes.

What you'll be doing:

  • Establish a coherent 12-18 month technical direction for the platform, with clearly articulated trade-offs, milestones, and alignment across engineering leadership.
  • Define the architectural patterns and standards that enable autonomous and AI-augmented workflows across the organisation.
  • Make high-judgement calls on foundational trade-offs such as build vs buy, depth vs breadth, short-term pragmatism vs long-term coherence.
  • Define how AI and automation are embedded into the platform at an architectural level.
  • Shape the platform roadmap based on feedback, usage data, and a clear-eyed view of where friction exists.
  • Identify architectural, security, and operational risks before they become incidents.
  • Represent the platform strategy to senior leadership and translate engineering constraints into business language.
  • Raise the capability of the team, not just the quality of the code.

You're unlikely to thrive here if:

  • You prefer executing predefined tasks over taking ownership of ambiguous problems.
  • You view platform engineering as building infrastructure in isolation rather than treating it as a product.
  • You're uncomfortable with rapid change and continuous improvement.

You'll always have clarity on pay early in the process. Our approach is to design compensation that's competitive in the market, fair across teams, and aligned with the impact our people make.

Equity: We offer equity across all roles at hx, making it a significant component of total compensation.

Benefits:

  • 5,000 training and conference budget for individual and group development.
  • 25 days of holiday plus 8 bank holidays (33 days total).
  • Company pension scheme via Penfold.
  • Mental health support and therapy via Spectrum.life.
  • Individual wellbeing allowance via Juno.
  • Private healthcare insurance through AXA.
  • Income protection and Life Insurance.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
  • Regular remote and in-person hackathons, lunch and learns, socials, and game nights.
  • Exceptional opportunities for personal development and growth.

Interview process: Initial call with our Talent team (30 minutes). Diversity is key to solving the complex challenges we choose to take on. Our dedicated talent team reviews all applications, and we promise to provide feedback regardless of the outcome.

Please note that background checks will be conducted as part of the hiring process to ensure compliance with our governance policies.

How to prepare for a job interview at hyperexponential

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If hyperexponential uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
