We have recently been awarded a grant in excess of £1 million from the UK’s Aerospace Technology Institute and are now seeking a Thermal Systems Engineer to expand our team to deliver this project and develop our technology.
We are seeking a highly skilled Thermal Systems Simulation and Design Engineer to design, analyse, and optimize thermal management systems for electric aircraft propulsion. This role includes expertise in cryogenic systems, advanced simulation techniques, and performance evaluation to ensure efficient and reliable thermal solutions in aerospace applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement thermal simulation models to analyse heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and cooling systems within aircraft components.
- Conduct computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and finite element analysis (FEA) to assess thermal performance.
- Design and optimize thermal management systems, including cryogenic cooling solutions for next-generation aviation technologies.
- Evaluate cryogenic fluid behaviours, insulation techniques, and heat dissipation strategies for aircraft applications.
- Conduct experimental validation of thermal and cryogenic models and assist with testing procedures.
- Ensure compliance with aerospace regulations and standards (FAA, EASA, AS9100, etc.).
- Drive innovation in thermal and cryogenic engineering solutions for sustainable aviation technologies.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for technical innovation and intellectual property (IP) development, publication and conferences.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in thermal systems design and simulation within the aviation or aerospace industry.
- Experience in thermal systems simulation and design for electric aircraft or electric propulsion systems.
- Expertise in cryogenic systems, including phase-change cooling, storage, insulation, and fluid dynamics.
- Proficiency in simulation tools such as ANSYS, MATLAB, COMSOL, Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of heat transfer principles, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics.
- Experience with materials selection for thermal and cryogenic applications in aerospace environments.
- Knowledge of aircraft systems, propulsion technology, and avionics cooling solutions.
- Ability to interpret thermal and cryogenic testing data and experimental results.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- PhD in Thermal Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience with AI-driven thermal simulations and digital twin technologies.
- Exposure to cryogenic cooling technologies for high-performance aerospace applications.
- Familiarity with sustainable aviation technologies, including hydrogen-electric and hybrid propulsion systems.
Key relationships
The TSS&DE reports to the Engineering Director and will also report indirectly to the Project Manager. The TSS&DE will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with staff in the Company. They will also work with external suppliers and other internal areas as required to perform effectively in the position.
