The Role
We're looking for a hands-on, forward-thinking Design and Test Engineer to join our small but fast-moving team. If you're excited by ambitious hardware challenges and want to help shape the future of aviation, we'd love to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and analysis
- Design of test rig(s) for thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic testing of superconducting motors and cryogenic heat exchangers.
- Develop 2D drawings and 3D models of components.
- Prepare P&ID diagrams for test rig.
- Assist with modelling and design of critical components of a superconducting motor, heat exchangers and associated test equipment, from early-stage concepts to manufacturable assemblies.
- Perform FEA of selected components.
- Prepare and manage engineering drawings and documentation for prototyping and supplier communication.
- Collaborate with external manufacturers to ensure parts are production-ready and meet tolerance/fitment requirements.
- Liaise with test house(s) to ensure test rig is compatible with test facilities and safety protocols and suitable test slots are negotiated and secured.
- Manage configuration e.g. CAD models, e-BOM, m-BOM and product change process of all products i.e. motor, heat exchanger and test rig.
- Help shape design and documentation workflows as we scale up.
- Contribute to structured technical planning across design office and workshop activities in close coordination with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Ensure adherence to all relevant aerospace industry regulations and standards, including but not limited to CAA, FAA, EASA and AS9100.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- 3+ years' experience in mechanical design with a strong focus on CAD modeling and drafting.
- Proficiency in one or more major CAD packages (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA, Autodesk Inventor).
- Experience designing electromechanical or rotating machinery, ideally for motors, turbines, or similar systems.
- Experience in test rig design and delivery.
- Strong understanding of mechanical tolerances, fits, and materials.
- Able to work independently and adapt quickly in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and a structured approach to design documentation.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
- Experience with cryogenic systems or superconducting technologies.
- Familiarity with electromagnetic or thermal design constraints.
- Familiarity with electric propulsion systems (e.g., aviation, marine or automotive).
- Experience using FEA tools for stress thermal analysis.
- Background in aerospace, energy, or R&D environments.
Key relationships
The Engineer reports technically to the Engineering Director and will also report indirectly to the appropriate Programme Manager. The Engineer will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with staff in the Company. The Engineer will also work with external suppliers and other internal areas as required to perform effectively in the position.
