Spectrum Geosurvey specialise in coastal geophysical surveys, supporting a wide range of clients in the offshore renewables sector. We have a proven track record delivering the highest-quality hydrographic and geophysical survey data. Spectrum Geosurvey are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our growing team based in our Lymington office.

As a Senior Geophysicist, you will be predominantly responsible for leading a field team, acquiring geophysical data as well as assisting data processing and interpretation when in the office. It is a great opportunity to build on your skills and gain further exposure to a variety of interesting projects in the offshore renewable energy sector.

Successful applicants shall have a strong background in geology and/or geophysics and should have a working knowledge of marine surveying. They will be a role model to more junior members of the team and will assist in their training. Supported by an experienced and committed team, successful candidates will be developing skill sets to carry out the following tasks within our growing company.

  1. Undertake fieldwork for extended periods of time away from home on projects onshore and offshore.
  2. Lead offshore surveys in the field, with duties including maintaining effective communication with the office on operational data QC matters, as well as building strong relationships with client representatives.
  3. Project manage survey projects where necessary.
  4. Assist in leading data acquisition, maintain accurate records and assist in maintaining quality and consistency of field data, data processing, deliverable creation, and data management.
  5. Assist Processing and reporting managers with reporting, charting & data management.
  6. Liaise with clients and organisations throughout the lifecycle of projects where necessary.
  7. Support Project Managers in project technical matters.
  8. Take ownership of data archive and data repository management, ensuring safe storage of a large variety of data formats.
  9. Lead mobilisations, calibrations and equipment verifications.
  10. Be a technical authority on geophysical survey equipment and software.
  11. Continual training/development of junior staff and maintaining and updating training/procedural material.
  12. Adhere to and develop company QHSE standards. The Senior Geophysicist should be set an example when it comes to safe working practices.
  13. Support and maintain QHSE standards, including relevant documentation.
  14. Implementing best practices for handling, maintaining and storing survey equipment as per manufacturer’s instructions or company guidance.
  15. Take ownership of notifying software manufacturers of any bugs and assist with implementing solutions.
  16. Guide, manage and be a role model and more junior members of the team, assisting in development of procedures and their training.
  17. Show a high level of leadership amongst the team.
  18. Identification, investigation and troubleshooting inconsistencies in data, ensuring that it complies with the project scope of work.
  19. Assist with data processing when back in the office. This includes processing side scan sonar, magnetometer and sub-bottom profiler data, seabed characterisation and hazard identification, chart creation, and reporting.
  20. Data quality control and data assurance ensuring that it complies with the project scope of work.
  21. Take the lead of research into new technologies and arrange system/software trials to keep Spectrum on the cutting edge.
  22. Form part of the on-call roster for weekend technical support when required.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Geology, Geophysics or other related marine or earth science.
  2. At least 3 years working onboard vessels undertaking marine survey operations.
  3. Have led a small team undertaking various marine survey tasks.
  4. Have led vessel mobilisations and calibrations.
  5. Ability to take initiative, to problem solve and troubleshoot data where required.
  6. Competent with GIS and spatial data (QGIS & ArcGIS).
  7. Understanding of data management and required coordination skills to handle large volumes of data.
  8. Good interpersonal and written communication skills.
  9. Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a training environment.
  10. High level of computer literacy.
  11. High level of attention to detail.
  12. Highly competent in the use of all Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
  13. Strong academic report writing skills.
  14. Able to work in the UK.
  15. Full valid UK driving license.
  16. Experience with a scripting language (e.g. Python).
  17. Experience of training and mentoring.
  18. Adhere to moral and ethical principles in all interactions.
