This is a flexible home-based opportunity to lead the operation of The Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland and help grow the footprint and influence of the Society and the seabed mapping profession in general.
Organisation: The Hydrographic Society UK, operating as The Hydrographic Society UK & Ireland (THS:UKI), is an independent, non-profit making, non-governmental, learned professional society. It provides a forum for all those involved in activities related to hydrography and associated disciplines, both in the UK and overseas.
Reporting To: Chair and Board of Directors
Contract Type: Two-year fixed-term freelance appointment, part-time, one day per week, based upon one-fifth of a 37.5-hour full-time role (increasing for key events). Flexible hours and working supported.
Renumeration: Salary £300 per day (equivalent to £72,000 a year if full time). No holiday or sick pay entitlement provided.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to THS:UKI. The role ensures the effective governance, financial management, and day-to-day administration of the Society, while driving engagement, visibility, and long-term sustainability.
Strategic Leadership:- Develop, implement, and report on THS:UKI’s long-term strategic plan in collaboration with the Board.
- Provide clear advice and insight to support informed decision-making by Trustees and Directors.
- Identify opportunities to grow the Society’s reach, relevance, impact and delivery against the Objects defined in the Memorandum and Articles of Association.
- Ensure THS:UKI operates in accordance with legal, regulatory, and governance requirements.
- Support the effective functioning of the Board, committees, and governance structures.
- Prepare reports, papers, and updates for Board meetings.
- Oversee the Society’s financial management, budgeting, and reporting.
- Ensure sound financial controls and sustainable use of resources.
- Work with relevant officers and advisers on financial planning.
- Direct line management of the Society’s Operations and Engagement Manager (OEM) and oversight of the day-to-day administration of the Society and operational processes.
- Ensure efficient systems, procedures, policies and guidance documents are in place to support the delivery of the Society’s objects.
- Alongside the Chair, act as a public representative and ambassador for THS:UKI.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with members, Branches, partners, sponsors, and stakeholders.
- Promote engagement, value, and benefits for Society members.
- Maintain an effective working relationship with the International Federation of Hydrographic Societies (IFHS).
- Represent THS:UKI at relevant meetings, events, and conferences as required.
- Senior leadership experience, ideally within a professional body, charity, membership organisation, or similar.
- Strong strategic planning and delivery capability.
- Experience of governance, compliance, and working with Boards or Trustees.
- Sound financial awareness and experience overseeing budgets.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities in a part-time, flexible role.
- Knowledge of hydrography, marine science, geospatial, or related technical sectors.
- Experience working with international partners or federations.
- Experience representing an organisation publicly or at professional events.
