Lead, develop, and continuously improve the UK Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) function for HBS.
Own the Incident Management System (IMS), drive audit control, ensure legal compliance, and embed Hydro values of Care, Courage, Collaboration.
To achieve a high performance HSE site, with a zero lost work time culture.
Able to work in a fast-paced environment with group reporting deadlines, and willing to take responsibility for multiple tasks, projects, and HSE initiatives.
The job requires the person to be able to own, lead and manage everything related to HSE within HBS UK
Responsibilities
- Implement the HBS UK HSE strategy aligned with Hydro group policies, UK legal obligations and key business objectives.
- Champion a proactive safety culture and visible HSE leadership across all UK sites.
- Own and maintain the UK IMS system and case management.
- Ensure policies, procedures, and controls are current, practical, and aligned to ISO standards.
- Lead Auditor for ISO 14001, 45001, and assist in BES 6001 responsible sourcing
- Build and run the annual HSE audit program, maintain audit action logs, risk registers, and legal compliance calendars.
- Ensure compliance with UK H&S legislation (e. g., HSWA, CDM for applicable projects, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, RIDDOR, WTR) and environmental obligations (waste, permits, duty of care)
- Monitor HSE regulatory updates; translate changes into practical controls and training.
- Oversee with the site maintenance engineer, safe systems of work, permits to work, lock‑out/tag‑out, and contractor controls.
- Develop and deliver relevant HSE training – induction materials, mandatory group training, or role specific HSE training.
- Run campaigns, toolbox talks, and engagement activities that reinforce Hydro values and desired behaviors.
- Lead incident reporting, investigation, and learning (including near misses), using 5 Why, Fishbone, and root cause methodology alongside HOP principles.
- Define monitor and report on relevant HSE KPIs.
- Partner with all other departments in the business to integrate HSE into planning and daily execution.
- Continually look for improved sustainability offerings in our ways of working, packaging and energy consumptions.
- Become a HOP champion.
- Carry out any other ad hoc tasks as required.
