We are working with a leading organisation operating within a complex, regulated environment to appoint a Head of Commercial. This is a senior leadership role focused on strengthening commercial governance, contract management and risk across a portfolio of high-value, long-term contracts. This is an excellent opportunity for a commercially astute leader to shape best practice, drive consistency, and support strategic decision-making at a senior level.
The Role
Reporting to the Commercial Director, you will lead a small, high-performing team and act as the subject matter expert across all contractual and commercial matters. The focus of the role is to bring structure, control and commercial rigour to contract delivery—ensuring risk is managed, processes are robust, and contractual positions are protected.
Key Responsibilities
- Commercial Governance & Contracts
- Lead the development and implementation of commercial governance frameworks
- Ensure consistent and compliant contract management across the business
- Take ownership of contractual claims, disputes and adjudications
- Drive best practice in contract administration, change control and variation management
- Lead on commercial risk identification, mitigation and reporting
- Provide expert contractual advice to operational and commercial teams
- Establish and standardise commercial processes across contract management and assurance
- Support audit activity and ensure robust commercial controls are in place
- Deliver clear commercial reporting, identifying risks and opportunities
- Work closely with senior internal stakeholders to improve commercial capability
- Support supply chain engagement and subcontractor governance
- Contribute to procurement and commercial strategy where required
- Lead and develop a team of 4 commercial professionals
- Support the Commercial Director and wider leadership team
- Drive a proactive, solutions-focused commercial culture
What We’re Looking For
- Strong background in commercial contract management within complex environments
- Proven experience managing claims, disputes and adjudications
- Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts (NEC3/NEC4)
- Experience within public sector or government contracts (highly desirable)
- Ability to interpret complex contractual and commercial information
- Confident stakeholder manager, able to influence at senior level
- Resilient, energetic and solutions-focused approach
Experience & Qualifications
- Degree qualified (Law, Quantity Surveying or similar) or equivalent experience
- Professional accreditation (or working towards) advantageous
- Full UK driving licence required
- Willingness to travel as required
