(PM273) Technical Director – Ecology (South)

POSITION: Technical Director – Ecologist (South)
LOCATION: Bristol, Leicester, Southampton, Cardiff

Are you an experienced ecologist looking to further your career in a large, well-respected consultancy without the glass ceiling? This is an exciting opportunity to develop a technical area within a UK-based Ecology team whilst collaborating and being supported by technical experts from across the business. The Technical Director will lead a technical specialism to achieve commercial objectives and provide exceptional levels of service to clients, reinforcing their reputation as a centre of excellence.

The Technical Director will:

  1. Where appropriate for the technical specialism, meet the requirements of the Capable, and preferably Accomplished, competencies in line with the CIEEM Competency Framework guide.
  2. Lead the development of technical excellence and solutions based on relevant best practice and research, including knowledge sharing across the national Ecology team.
  3. Supervise and review the development of standard technical solutions and verify that outputs meet expected quality standards.
  4. Contribute to the development of a strategy to develop opportunities for the technical area including identifying links between research-based projects and generating work for the wider team.
  5. Contribute to planning committees, inquiries and Expert Witness evidence.
  6. Manage projects including scope, cost/revenue budgets, third party deliverables and change control, WIP, invoicing and debt.
  7. Negotiate and discuss fees and Terms and Conditions, bespoke contracts and warranties (with support from our inhouse legal team) as appropriate.
  8. Demonstrate experience of fulfilling task timescales and achieving deadlines with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and third parties regarding risks and potential issues.
  9. Have line management responsibility including timesheet signoff, pastoral care and duty of care where appropriate for the technical specialism.
  10. Lead the mentoring and development of staff in line with strategic goals for the technical specialism.
  11. Be involved with business development activity including having an awareness of market conditions, opportunities and competition for the technical specialism and the identification and delivery of opportunities with new and existing clients.
  12. Be a chartered member of an appropriate professional body and have 10 years equivalent experience.
  13. Hold a full driving licence.

Projects

Working across a breadth of sectors including Residential, Defence, Energy, Government Services and Transport. Examples of projects across the Ecology team include:

  1. Large scale residential scheme including complex EPS mitigation for a range of species including GCN, dormice, bats and badger;
  2. Delivery of Local Planning Authority frameworks;
  3. Ecological survey, mitigation and enhancement in relation to extension and new quarries/mineral sites;
  4. Protected species surveys and habitat assessments for DIO sites across the South including various EPS mitigation schemes and design including badger, bat, GCN and water voles;
  5. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment and Nutrient Neutrality assessments including input into innovative mitigation projects;
  6. Involvement on a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project undertaking detailed ecological design;
  7. Survey, monitoring and advice to statutory organisations in relation to rare and notable plant species.
