About the Role: The primary purpose of the Director of Data, AI and Privacy Policy is to advance CIPL’s policy priorities and initiatives in the US in relation to a wide range of AI, privacy, and data related law, policy, implementation and compliance topics, including the US law and policy development process. In addition, the Director of Data, AI and Privacy Policy will also work on international AI, data and privacy projects with CIPL’s global team of privacy experts based in London and Brussels.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Hands on drafting and overseeing of CIPL research and deliverables – white papers, reports, op-eds, and other written deliverables.
  • Working closely with CIPL team members to develop strategies, oversee and implement project plans to advance CIPL’s US and global policy agenda on AI, data, and privacy topics.
  • Leading CIPL’s work on the US privacy law and policy development process at the federal and state levels and engaging with relevant lawmakers, staff and legislative committees to advance CIPL’s policy positions.
  • Helping position CIPL as a policy thought leader by staying abreast of US and global public policy developments in data, AI, privacy and related areas, by anticipating relevant emerging issues and developing CIPL’s policy positions.
  • Deepen relationships and exchanges with current CIPL members and help recruit new CIPL members and project participants.
  • Seeking opportunities for and helping manage collaboration with CIPL member companies, think tanks, academics, industry groups and policy influencers to advance CIPL’s policy agenda.
  • Developing agendas and content for CIPL and non-CIPL events and speaking/representing CIPL at these events.
  • Assisting with special projects and consulting assignments relevant to CIPL’s mission and CIPL members.
  • Management responsibilities to oversee, develop and grow CIPL team and skillsets across geographies.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (J.D., Ph.D., or Master’s) in law, public policy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of relevant professional experience (e.g., industry, professional services, law firms, think tanks, trade associations, government, regulatory agencies, or legislative roles).
  • Deep knowledge of global data protection, AI, privacy, and related laws, policies, and regulatory frameworks, including emerging technologies.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. federal and state legislative and regulatory processes, with a demonstrated track record of engagement with policymakers and stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to conduct and lead research on emerging AI, data, and privacy issues, including regulatory developments, policy trends, and organizational best practices.
  • Exceptional writing, analytical, and public speaking skills, with experience drafting public consultation responses, white papers, and thought leadership articles.
  • Ability to distill complex concepts into clear, persuasive communications.
  • Solid understanding of data-driven innovation, technology trends, and/or foundational computer science concepts.
  • Strong business judgment and understanding of the global corporate environment, including practical experience with data protection compliance and privacy management programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, with an entrepreneurial mindset, proactive approach, and ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Interests, Experience or Qualifications:

  • Understanding of technology trends, computer science and/or data analytics.
  • Competition law, intellectual property law, and/or regulatory compliance.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is a plus.
