An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled and proactive Controls Engineer to join a growing automation and systems integration team based in Cheltenham. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering complete control system solutions, with a strong emphasis on programming PLCs and HMIs from the ground up. This role suits someone who thrives in a hands-on engineering environment and has a passion for solving complex automation challenges.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement control systems, including programming of PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems from scratch.
  • Create detailed electrical and control system schematics using CAD software.
  • Conduct site visits for commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of automation systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical design teams to ensure seamless integration of control systems.
  • Interpret client specifications and translate them into effective control system solutions.
  • Support project lifecycle from concept through to completion, including FAT and SAT procedures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of software and system changes.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience in PLC and HMI programming from scratch (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, or similar platforms).
  • Solid understanding of industrial control systems, automation architecture, and electrical principles.
  • Experience with fieldbus communications (e.g., Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP).
  • Ability to read and produce electrical/control schematics.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for site commissioning (International).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and strong attention to detail.
  • Right to work in the UK.
