The Transport and Customer Freight Manager is responsible for the end-to-end performance of inbound and outbound distribution operations across multiple sales channels and multi-site inbound networks. This role ensures the efficient, compliant, and cost-effective movement of goods while consistently delivering agreed service levels to customers and internal stakeholders.
With full operational accountability, the postholder will oversee complex transport operations including carrier performance, capacity planning, route optimisation, and distribution execution across a geographically dispersed network. Strong operational control, customer service excellence, and documentation accuracy are critical to success. The role also plays a key part in driving continuous improvement across transport and distribution activities, using structured problem solving and root cause analysis to enhance service delivery, reduce cost, and improve operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities- Manage day-to-day inbound and outbound transport operations across multiple sites and sales channels, ensuring service, compliance, and cost targets are met.
- Plan and control distribution activity, including route optimisation, capacity planning, and carrier performance management.
- Lead transport operations in collaboration with internal teams and external logistics partners to deliver reliable and efficient service.
- Ensure robust operational controls and accurate documentation, including delivery manifests, invoicing, and reconciliations.
- Monitor performance metrics such as service levels, damages, and cost drivers, identifying trends and improvement opportunities.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using root cause analysis and structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Manage transport and freight budgets, controlling spend and identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising service.
- Ensure full compliance with health, safety, and transport legislation, promoting a strong safety culture.
- Lead, coach, and develop team members to build capability and drive high performance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Customer Services, Manufacturing, Planning, and Finance to ensure aligned execution.
- Contribute to strategic planning and development of the logistics and distribution function.
- Proven experience managing transport and freight operations within a complex, multi-site environment.
