Health & Safety Manager Location: Belgium, project based Salary: Competitive, depending on experience About the business Our client is a specialist construction contractor delivering groundworks, reinforced concrete structures, drainage, structural alterations and external works across the UK and Europe. Its portfolio includes major data centre developments and technically demanding civil engineering and structural packages. The opportunity Our client is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to support its construction operations in Belgium. You will take day-to-day ownership of health and safety across project activities, working closely with project leadership, supervisors, subcontractors and the client’s safety team. The role requires a visible site presence, strong technical judgement and the ability to help a multinational workforce deliver complex construction work safely. A NEBOSH qualification is essential for this position. Key responsibilities Implement company health and safety procedures alongside applicable Belgian requirements and project standards. Carry out site inspections and audits, agree corrective actions and verify their completion. Support the preparation and review of risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work. Monitor controls for excavations, underground services, lifting operations, plant movements, work at height, formwork, falsework and concrete works. Work with engineering and delivery teams to address safety during planning, temporary works coordination and construction sequencing. Coordinate with the principal contractor, project safety coordinator and relevant prevention advisers. Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and briefings that are understood by a multilingual workforce. Assess subcontractor safety arrangements and monitor compliance throughout delivery. Investigate incidents and near misses, establish underlying causes and ensure lessons are applied. Maintain project safety records and report performance, outstanding actions and emerging risks to management. Monitor occupational health controls relating to dust, noise, vibration, hazardous substances and manual handling. Support emergency planning, first-aid arrangements and site welfare provision. Promote workforce consultation, wellbeing and early reporting of unsafe conditions. Stop unsafe activities where necessary and support a safe, controlled restart. Experience and qualifications Essential A NEBOSH qualification is mandatory, such as a NEBOSH General Certificate, construction health and safety qualification or Diploma. Experience as a Health & Safety Manager or senior Health & Safety Advisor on substantial construction projects. A strong background in groundworks, civil engineering or reinforced concrete construction. Working knowledge of Belgian construction health and safety requirements and experience applying them on site. Experience conducting inspections, audits and incident investigations. Confidence influencing project leaders, subcontractors and site operatives. Strong written and spoken English, with experience communicating across multinational teams. Ability to work regularly on site in Belgium.Desirable Experience on data centre or other technically demanding construction projects. Experience with ISO 45001 management systems. French or Dutch language skills, particularly the language used at the project location. Experience working within permit-to-work and contractor safety systems.
