Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – Key Stage 2

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

Start Date: September 2026

Contract Type: Full-time, temporary (expected to run for the full academic year)

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the School

A vibrant, forward-thinking mainstream primary school located in Newcastle is seeking to appoint a dedicated and passionate Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). The school prides itself on fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where every child is encouraged to reach their full potential. With a welcoming staff team and excellent resources, this is a wonderful community in which to work.

The Role

This is a full-time, long-term position starting in September 2026. The successful candidate will take on a vital role within the school, primarily delivering high-quality Planning, Preparation, and Assessment (PPA) cover across Key Stage 2 (KS2).

This position requires an individual who can step into classrooms confidently, maintain consistency in learning, and lead lessons independently in the teacher’s absence. Given the scope of the cover, the role is highly likely to continue through to the end of the academic year in July 2027.

Key Responsibilities

  • PPA Cover: Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging lessons to KS2 classes, ensuring continuity of learning in line with the National Curriculum.
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a positive, safe, and productive learning environment using the school’s established behaviour policies.
  • Assessment & Feedback: Mark students' work, assess progress, and provide constructive feedback to class teachers to support pupil development.
  • Targeted Support: Work collaboratively with teaching assistants and standard class teachers to support pupils of varying abilities, including those with SEND.

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualifications: Must hold a recognised HLTA qualification, a Foundation Degree in Education, or equivalent experience/teaching qualifications.
  • Experience: Proven track record of leading full classes and managing behaviour effectively, specifically within Upper or Lower Key Stage 2.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to build quick, positive relationships with both staff and pupils.
  • Safeguarding: An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or a willingness to apply for one) is essential, alongside excellent professional references.

How to Apply

To apply for this rewarding opportunity in Newcastle, please submit an up-to-date CV and a brief covering letter outlining relevant KS2 experience. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis ahead of the September start.
