We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Medical Microbiology and Virology to join the Path Links Microbiology team, based at the Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby. This is an existing funded post within an established six-consultant service providing clinical microbiology, virology, infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship advice across the six acute hospitals of Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust and United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The service processed just over one million specimens in 2025/26 and serves about 2,150 inpatient beds, including 45 critical care beds.
The post sits within the Humber Health Partnership Infection model, which brings together Path Links Microbiology and the Department of Infection at Hull University Teaching Hospitals, a specialist regional infectious diseases centre. The appointee will have a Grimsby base, will provide cross-cover to other Path Links sites, and will join a 1 in 6 out of hours rota. The post attracts 10 PAs per week plus the on-call element, valued at job planning.
There is no fixed lead role. Candidates with interests in IPC, antimicrobial stewardship, OPAT, teaching or quality improvement are encouraged to develop them. The post is designed for hybrid working, with an indicative pattern of three on-site and two remote days per week. Applications to work less than full time are welcome.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the post are to:
- Provide, with consultant colleagues, a comprehensive clinical microbiology and virology service to NLaG, ULTH and primary care across the Path Links network.
- Authorise and interpret microbiology, virology and serology results and communicate clinically significant results to clinical teams.
- Take part in the daily microbiology handover and the consultant clinical advice service for hospital clinicians and general practitioners.
- Undertake timetabled ward rounds at the Grimsby base, including a weekly critical care round, a weekly antimicrobial stewardship round with the AMS pharmacist, and IPC ward visits and outbreak reviews.
- Provide medical microbiology input to the NLaG IPC team, including the daily IPC handover, outbreak investigation and advice on isolation, decontamination and the built environment.
- Work with the antimicrobial pharmacy and OPAT teams on stewardship ward rounds, guideline development, audit and education.
- Contribute to laboratory quality management, UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation, standard operating procedures and evaluation of new methods.
- Teach and supervise specialty doctors, resident doctors in training, scientists and medical students.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, appraisal, job planning and revalidation.
- Join the 1 in 6 consultant on-call rota providing telephone advice to all Path Links sites.
