Op Tek Systems is a global supplier of laser processing tools and sub-contract laser machining services.
Role Purpose
Working within the electrical design department to generate all necessary documentation, schematic designs and PLC code for special purpose machinery, ensuring all relevant standards and directives are satisfied.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Reporting to the Lead Electrical Controls Engineer, responsibilities for this role include, but not limited to:
- Creation of single-line block diagrams for concept review
- Creation of 2D electrical schematics in CAD
- Power loading and wire rating calculations
- BOM management
- Design, implementation and testing of functional safety systems + supporting documentation
- Design, implementation and testing of machine PLC systems
- Appropriate hardware and cable selection
- Generation of test / commissioning documentation
- Where necessary, assist technicians during machine build stage
- Liaise with build technicians to ensure machines are built to relevant standards
- Provide assistance during commissioning phase of machines
- Assist Op Tek’s process R&D team with new experimental laboratory test rigs
- Where necessary, provide technical assistance to Op Tek’s service team
Additionally, the role may involve other duties and responsibilities as appropriate for the position.
Role Requirements
- Sound knowledge of electrical CAD software, ideally Solidworks electrical, but other packages considered, e. g. Auto CAD electrical, Eplan
- Understanding of EMC requirements and methods to comply
- Able to carry out electrical safety testing
- Sound understanding of CNC systems
- Working knowledge of IEC and UL standards
- Good understanding of relevant standards for functional safety systems
- Able to work to project schedules and deadlines
- Able to adopt a hands‑on approach to engineering
- Able to manage own time effectively and engage with multiple departments
- Able to work to own initiative
- Clear logical thinker
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelors’ 2:1 degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline OR, 3-5 years’ relevant experience in electrical design.
- Experience and understanding machine applications.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems design.
- PLC programming/coding experience.
- Experience of industrial bus systems and connectivity.
