Love solving complex technical problems where software meets the physical world? Want to work on software that controls real hardware, processes live data and makes a genuine difference beyond the screen? Enjoy the variety of working across backend development, real-time systems, web applications and cutting-edge technology?
If you're a Software Engineer with strong C# skills and a curiosity for how things work, this could be a fantastic opportunity to take your career in an exciting direction. We're working with an established, technology-driven organisation in Oxfordshire that's looking for a Software Engineer to join its talented development team. Our client develops sophisticated, integrated technology solutions used in demanding, real-world environments. Their software brings together advanced hardware, high-volume data acquisition, real-time processing and cloud-based services.
You'll be joining a collaborative engineering team where your contributions will be visible, your ideas will be valued, and you'll have the opportunity to work across a genuinely varied technology stack.
Why This Role is Great
This isn't a role where you'll spend every day working on the same application or fixing the same problems. You'll have the opportunity to get involved in the full software lifecycle, working on complex systems that combine hardware, software and data.
- Build software that interacts with the real world. Develop and enhance C# applications that control sophisticated hardware, manage real-time data acquisition and coordinate multiple system components.
- Master real-time and multi-threaded development. Get hands-on with performance-sensitive applications where timing, reliability and efficient processing really matter.
- Work across the full technology stack. From backend services and databases to ASP.NET Core web applications, you'll enjoy the variety of contributing to different parts of an integrated platform.
- Explore the hardware/software boundary. Gain exposure to hardware communications, telemetry, sensor integration and the technical challenges of connecting physical equipment with intelligent software.
- Solve interesting engineering challenges. Investigate complex issues, optimise performance and develop solutions for systems operating in environments that aren't always easy to replicate.
- Develop your expertise in data and image processing. Work with technologies that capture, process, interpret and distribute large volumes of technical data.
- Make your mark on software quality. Contribute to code reviews, testing, deployment improvements and engineering best practices, helping shape how the team builds software.
- See your work make an impact. Collaborate with engineers and technical specialists to understand how software performs in practice and help deliver improvements that matter.
The Technology You'll Get to Work With
One of the biggest attractions of this opportunity is the breadth of technology involved.
Core technologies:
- C# and .NET / ASP.NET Core MVC
- Multi-threaded and real-time software development
- Microsoft SQL Server and Entity Framework
- SignalR, TCP/IP and UDP communications
Opportunities to broaden your experience:
- C and C++ for lower-level hardware integration
- Hardware interfacing and embedded systems
- Machine vision and image processing with Halcon.NET
- WinForms applications
- REST APIs, Swagger and OpenAPI
- Data acquisition, processing and cloud-connected services
You absolutely don't need experience with everything listed above. Strong C# development skills and an enthusiasm for exploring new technologies are far more important.
About You
You'll likely be someone who enjoys understanding the bigger picture rather than focusing exclusively on one small part of an application. Perhaps you're already working on complex .NET systems and want to move closer to hardware and real-time engineering. Or maybe you've gained experience in an engineering-focused environment and would love the opportunity to work across a broader range of technologies.
We'd love to hear from you if you can bring some of the following:
- Strong C# development experience, with a solid understanding of .NET and modern software engineering practices.
- Experience building or maintaining applications using ASP.NET Core or similar frameworks.
- Confidence working with relational databases, ideally SQL Server and Entity Framework.
- An interest in multi-threaded programming, real-time processing or performance-sensitive applications.
- A methodical approach to debugging, particularly when working with complex or interconnected systems.
- The ability to understand existing codebases, explore unfamiliar components and contribute meaningful improvements.
- A natural curiosity about how software communicates with hardware and other systems.
- Experience with C++, embedded software, machine vision, hardware integration or engineering-focused applications would be a welcome bonus.
Equally, if your background is primarily in backend C#/.NET development and you're excited about expanding into these areas, we'd still really encourage you to apply. What matters most is your technical foundation, problem-solving ability and willingness to learn.
What's in It for You?
Salary: Up to £55,000 depending on experience. Beyond the salary, this is an opportunity to develop your skills in an environment that offers technical depth, variety and genuine engineering challenges.
- Meaningful technical ownership - contribute to software that plays a central role in real-world operations.
- Career development through hands-on experience - build expertise in real-time systems, hardware integration and complex software architecture.
- Varied and engaging projects - enjoy a role that combines development, problem-solving, optimisation and collaboration.
- A supportive engineering environment - work alongside experienced colleagues who understand the technology and enjoy solving challenging problems.
- Visible impact - see how your work contributes to the performance, reliability and evolution of established technology.
- Long-term technical challenges - develop and improve sophisticated systems rather than simply moving from one short-lived project to another.
If you're a C# Software Engineer, .NET Developer or Software Developer looking for something more technically varied, this could be exactly the opportunity you've been waiting for. You don't need to tick every box. If you have a strong software engineering foundation and an appetite to work with interesting technology, we'd love to hear from you.
