This post is offered as either office based (you will need to attend the office at least one day per week) or home based (office attendance specified by your line manager based on business need). Our office is in Stratford, east London.

Overview: The HFEA is the UK's independent regulator overseeing safe and appropriate practice in fertility treatment and embryo research. This role sits in the Research and Intelligence team and involves using data across the HFEA in statistical reports and dashboards, and preparing large and sensitive datasets for specific research purposes. The Data and Insights Analyst will provide regular extracts of register data, methodological advice on data projects and publications, and contribute to updates to the HFEA dashboard.

Responsibilities:

  • Query and extract data from the Register database using Microsoft SQL Server to support statutory responsibilities (e.g., freedom of information requests, parliamentary questions) and to provide data to external researchers in line with Regulations, applying regulatory exclusions where appropriate.
  • Prepare data for policy decisions to improve regulation and respond to public enquiries; provide regular, useful and accurate extracts of register data and advice on data projects and publications.
  • Lead on the development of official statistics publications (e.g., Fertility Trends) and reports on sector topics; ensure data is accurate, timely, and accessible for publications.
  • Populate Power BI with regular extracts of register data and maintain dashboards to meet the needs of the intelligence team and external stakeholders.
  • Liaise with colleagues across the HFEA and external organisations (e.g., Department of Health and Social Care) to determine data requirements and communicate strengths and limitations of register data.
  • Work with the Register and IT teams to translate analytical requirements into technical specifications; create advanced data models in SQL and Power BI.
  • Provide line management support where relevant and deliver training in SQL and Power BI to team members as required.
  • Represent the HFEA at conferences, external working groups, or panels as needed.
  • Maintain a production environment with change control and release management; ensure data reconciliation and quality assurance for register extracts.

Qualifications and Experience:

Qualifications — Essential: Degree or equivalent with significant quantitative analytical experience. Desirable: Masters or PhD with a quantitative component.

Experience — Essential: Experience in a production environment with change control and release management; extensive statistical analysis in healthcare or public-facing settings; ability to manipulate large, sensitive datasets; experience developing complex SQL queries. Desirable: Experience publishing official statistics; experience with Power BI; experience with SSMS and relational databases (MS SQL Server / MySQL).

Knowledge & Skills — Essential: Excellent analytical ability, independent working, effective communication with diverse stakeholders, and strong SQL skills. Desirable: Knowledge of information governance best practices.
