About the position

To manage and develop the Internal Audit function of Human Appeal, to monitor the effectiveness of Human Appeal’s risk management and internal control environment in the UK and at Field Office level.

All with a view to mitigating risk, providing assurance, improving organisational effectiveness, and ensuring that Human Appeal fulfil their obligations to international and government compliance, including Charity Commission and institutional funding requirements, ultimately fortifying trust in Human Appeal and therefore facilitating the acquisition and retention of donor support.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an Internal Audit methodology, strategy and annual plan, with consultation with the
    Audit Committee.
  • Oversee all Internal Audit activity at Human Appeal UK and at Field Office level, including risk management and
    control management over operations’ effectiveness, financial reliability and compliance with all applicable
    directives and regulations.
  • Determine internal audit scope, agree terms of reference, present the findings and follow-up on
    recommendations and agreed action plans.
  • Provide training, support and oversight to the Internal Audit team, ensuring that all staff take a consistent approach to the Internal Audit cycle in-line with Human Appeal’s audit methodology.
  • Regularly review Human Appeal’s approach towards identifying and managing risks and supporting relevant
    teams; seek to implement continual improvement to the Internal Audit cycle.
  • Act as a global ambassador for the Internal Audit function at Human Appeal, working with staff to promote a
    culture of risk awareness and support in assessing and mitigating risks.
  • Act as an objective source of independent advice to ensure validity, legality and goal achievement.

Identify
loopholes and recommend risk aversion measures and cost savings as well as providing advice on compliance
matters and review documentations.

  • Prepare and present reports that reflect each audit’s results and document process, as well as producing
    quarterly reports for the Audit Committee and an annual Internal Audit report on the overall effectiveness of
    Human Appeal’s internal control environment in all its offices and arrangements.
  • Conduct and oversee Internal Audit investigations related to serious incidents in the UK or at Field Office level if
    instances of fraud or other significant irregularities are identified.
  • Develop and maintain strong internal communication channels with Human Appeal Managers, Field Offices and
    Audit Committee.
  • Develop and maintain strong communication channels with external regulators and auditing bodies.
  • Support the wider Finance department with the year-end accounts process to ensure it is accurate, timely and
    compliant.
  • Represent Human Appeal at relevant sector meetings.
  • Engage in continued professional development regarding the INGO sectors rules, regulations, best practices, tools
    techniques and performance standards.

NB: Employee duties are not limited only to the above-mentioned Accountabilities; he/she may perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Degree-educated, ideally in a related field e. g. Finance, Accounting, Audit or
    Business Management.
    • Professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIA, CMIIA or equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in Internal Audit.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in people management.
  • Experience working in an Internal Audit remit at an NGO and / or with a global
    focus is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of risk management, governance and internal control
    framework.

Essential criteria

  • Experience planning and delivering risk-based audit programmes
  • Proven ability to lead, coach and develop audit teams.
  • Experience presenting audit findings and recommendations to senior
    management and Board/Audit Committee level.
  • Knowledge of charity sector regulations, funding arrangements and compliance
    requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, investigation and report-writing skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced
    environment.
  • High level of integrity, objectivity and professional judgement.
  • Experience working within an international charity, NGO or not-for-profit
    organisation.
  • Knowledge of Charity Commission regulations and SORP reporting
    requirements.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience auditing grant-funded programmes and donor-funded projects.
  • Experience using audit management and data analytics tools.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, anti-fraud and anti-corruption frameworks.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) or equivalent
    professional body.
  • Experience supporting organisational change and continuous improvement
    initiatives.
