About Us Window Machine Tool Company manufactures high-quality cutting tools and specialist components for the fenestration industry.
We work alongside HUM Precision Engineering, our subcontract CNC machining business, operating from the same facility in Exhall, Coventry.
Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced CNC Cutter Grinder to join our team and operate our Walter Helitronic CNC cutter-grinding machine.
The Role The successful candidate will be responsible for setting, operating and, where experience allows, programming a Walter CNC cutter grinder.
The role primarily involves manufacturing and regrinding large-diameter cutting blades used within the window and fenestration industry.
These cutters typically range from approximately 100mm to 250mm in diameter and include both standard square-edged cutters and more complex profile forms.
Our cutters are manufactured from carbide tips brazed onto mild-steel bodies, as well as solid tool-steel cutters.
The work includes grinding cutter diameters, faces, front and back teeth, flutes and specialist forms to drawing and profile requirements.
- Main Responsibilities
- Set and operate a Walter Helitronic CNC cutter grinder.
- Program new cutter-grinding jobs using Tool Studio.
- Manufacture and regrind carbide-tipped and tool-steel cutting blades.
- Grind cutter diameters, faces, teeth, flutes and profile forms.
- Select and set suitable diamond and CBN grinding wheels.
- Set grinding speeds, feeds and machining parameters for different materials and applications.
- Use probing and measuring systems to establish and verify cutter positions.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, tool profiles and customer specifications.
- Inspect finished cutters using appropriate measuring equipment and an optical profile projector.
- Carry out in-process inspection to ensure dimensional accuracy and the required surface finish.
- Make adjustments and offsets to maintain size and form throughout production.
- Diagnose grinding, wheel-wear and machine-related issues.
- Complete route cards and accurately record each stage of manufacture.
- Report any incorrect or missing manufacturing information and provide useful feedback for future repeat production.
- Perform routine machine checks, cleaning and basic preventative maintenance.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised working area.
- Support other areas of production when required.
Skills and Experience - Essential: • Previous experience setting and operating CNC cutter-grinding machinery.
- A good understanding of cutter-grinding principles and processes.
- Experience working with carbide, brazed carbide or hardened tool steel.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
- Competence using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
- Ability to work accurately to close tolerances.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small manufacturing team.
- Desirable
- Previous experience with Walter Helitronic cutter grinders and Walter software.
- Experience programming CNC cutter-grinding machines.
- Knowledge of diamond and CBN grinding wheels, including grit sizes, bonds and applications.
- Experience manufacturing large-diameter saw blades, profile cutters or tooling for the fenestration industry.
- Experience using optical profile projectors or similar inspection equipment.
- Knowledge of carbide-tip brazing.
- Experience with manual or universal cutter grinders.
Training and Development We understand that candidates may have strong cutter-grinding experience without having worked on the exact Walter machine or type of cutters we manufacture.
Training can therefore be provided in areas where required, depending on the candidate’s existing knowledge and experience.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help develop and expand our cutter-grinding department.
Our longer-term plans include increasing our cuttergrinding services, manufacturing a wider range of specialist fenestration tooling, and introducing the production of solid-carbide end mills and drills for both internal use and external sale.
What We Offer • Competitive hourly rate based on experience.
- Permanent, full-time employment.
- Early finish every Friday.
- Day shift with no regular night work.
- Overtime opportunities when available.
- Training on our products, processes and equipment.
- The opportunity to play an important role in a growing department.
- Genuine scope for increased responsibility and career progression.
- A friendly, practical and approachable working environment.
The exact responsibilities of the position may be adjusted to reflect the successful candidate’s experience, abilities and salary expectations.
Candidates with broader programming, grinding, tooling or CNC machining experience may be offered additional responsibilities and opportunities within the business
