The maternity services at Hull University Teaching Hospitals are committed to upholding and maintaining the highest standards of evidence-based practice and working in partnership with women and their families. We are looking for enthusiastic, efficient and kind midwifery support workers who will initially work in our triage department but will have the opportunity to work in all clinical areas of our maternity unit.

We provide care to over 5,000 families in one large maternity unit and across our community, delivering exceptional care in partnership with women, families and external stakeholders.

Main Duties of the Job

  • To contribute to the provision of evidence-based professional midwifery services.
  • The primary role of the Band 3 Maternity Support Worker (MSW) is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; to provide a safe and holistic approach to woman-centered care.
  • The midwife is ultimately responsible for the care of the mother and her newborn(s), and it is under the direct or indirect supervision of the midwife that the MSW assists with and provides care following completion of any relevant or appropriate training.
  • The employees will be provided with appropriate training for the clinical setting in which they are working. These settings include antenatal inpatient or outpatient care, intrapartum inpatient care, postnatal inpatient and outpatient care and community.
  • The post holder is expected to undertake a set of defined competencies, including the 'care certificate'. This certificate ensures the minimum standards for the role are met and further training will be given to ensure completion of the Level 3 'skills passport' within a given timeframe.
  • Opportunities will be available to employees to further develop their skills and explore pathways for progression where appropriate.

Minimum Requirements

  • Knowledge
  • Essential: Ability to exercise own initiative and work to deadlines; Awareness of current issues of health care in midwifery.
  • Desirable: Awareness of safeguarding; Breastfeeding support.
  • Skills
    • Essential: Competent in a range of clinical competencies relevant to the ward/department area; Understanding of the boundaries of the MSW role and responsibilities.
  • Experience
    • Essential: Recent working experience within a maternity unit/Healthcare setting; A good understanding of essential midwifery care.
    • Desirable: Awareness of safeguarding adults and children; Previous experience as a maternity support worker; Breastfeeding support.
  • Education/Qualifications
    • Essential: Math's & English GCSE Grade C/Level 4 or functional skills Level 2; Level 4 Maternity Support Worker Development Course or Certificate in Higher Education Maternity Support Work; The Care Certificate.
    • Desirable: Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Communication, Relationships & Personal Skills
    • Essential: Ability to work effectively as part of a team; Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Ability to work without direct supervision and prioritise workload; Good interpersonal skills; Ability to work within complex care setting/stressful situations; Good organisational skills; Kind and compassionate; Adaptable and flexible approach to work; Can evidence and demonstrate Trust values; Professional behaviour.
