Hull Studio is looking for a 3D/CAD designer (furniture) to join its studio in London. Hull Studio is a furniture design studio with an ethos that lies in exploring the relationship between traditional craftsmanship, modern technology and organic design. Our work includes limited edition furniture and one‑off art pieces, as well as bespoke private commissions for superyacht and luxury residential sectors, and interior projects.
About the role
The successful candidate will be working closely with the creative director and the design team, assisting with concepting, translating hand‑sketch information into 3D renders and models, preparing presentation layouts, design development and detailing, creating final 3D technical models and 2D drawings for production, liaising with technical draftsmen, checking manufacturing drawings and issuing them to the workshops for production.
You will need a strong, practical understanding of furniture construction, including chairs, ergonomics, tolerances and detailing. In parallel, you’ll be expected to produce high‑quality, production‑ready 3D textures from the outset, using Rhino, Creative Suite and digital sculpting/VFX‑style workflows that translate cleanly into real‑world manufacturing. We’re looking for someone experienced and capable who can hit the ground running.
As a key member of our team, you will be working on a wide variety of exciting bespoke projects for high‑profile superyacht and international residential projects, as well as art projects exhibited at the major design/art exhibitions. No two projects are the same. In addition, there will be an opportunity to work closely with various makers, from traditional cabinetmakers and leatherworkers to high‑tech composite manufacturers.
We are a very busy and fast‑growing studio, and there is a real opportunity to make a meaningful contribution and grow with the company. Our studio is located in the fantastic Nine Elms area of London, right next to the Battersea Power Station.
Required skills and qualities
- Proven experience in a 3D design‑focused role within furniture, interiors, product design, or a related creative industry.
- Proficiency with Rhino 3D, Photoshop and AutoCAD as part of a design development workflow is a must.
- Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, particularly for visualisation, image development, and presentation material.
- Proven experience developing free‑standing furniture (including chairs), with understanding of construction principles and detailing for manufacture.
- Proven experience creating complex 3D textures / relief surfaces (portfolio must clearly show this).
- Working knowledge of VFX / sculpting / procedural tools used for texture creation (digital sculpting, procedural generation, displacement/height workflows).
- Strong visual sensibility, with an understanding of form, proportion, and materials.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Self‑driven, proactive, and confident problem‑solver.
- Able to stay calm and effective under pressure in a fast‑paced studio environment.
- Flexible and collaborative, with the ability to work well within a small team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience liaising with subcontractors, suppliers, or external partners is an advantage.
Benefits include pension scheme, health insurance with WPA, ongoing learning and development opportunities, social events, and travel opportunities.
Candidates must already have the right to work in the UK. Ideally, we are looking for a full‑time position, but flexible arrangements and hybrid working can be discussed for the right candidate.
Please submit your CV and portfolio by email. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete a test assignment, followed by a face‑to‑face interview. Due to the high number of applications, we are only able to reply to shortlisted candidates. The job start date will be ASAP.
