Hull Minster is seeking an experienced freelance Project Manager to support the next stage of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project, Sound Foundations. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of one of Hull’s most important historic buildings and support the development of a major NLHF bid in the region of £7 million.

Founded in 1285, Hull Minster is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church in the heart of Hull’s Old Town. It is both a living place of worship and a major heritage site, led by the principles of following Jesus, building community, and living heritage.

Through Sound Foundations, we are delivering a development phase supported by a £233,000 National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. The project is designed to strengthen Hull Minster’s long-term sustainability through conservation planning, organ restoration planning, increased organisational capacity, and expanded heritage, music, and community engagement.

The successful candidate will help us prepare for the next major stage of this work. The wider bid will include:

  • restoration of the Grand Organ, currently estimated at £2.5 million
  • capital repairs to vulnerable parts of the building, including stained glass, roofs, and the North Transept
  • further organisational development to support long-term resilience and sustainability.

We are looking for a Project Manager who can bring both strategic insight and practical rigour to this next phase. The role will include:

  • appraising and assessing Hull Minster’s organisational structure
  • measuring working capacity and human resources, and recommending changes to improve delivery
  • defining the limits of the current organisational model and assessing what would be required in the event of a successful major bid
  • creating a project plan and risk register
  • supporting the development of the major NLHF bid, particularly around organisational sustainability.

Contract details:

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Time commitment: 3 days per week
  • Rate: £425 per day
  • Working pattern: Flexible hybrid working, with on-site presence at the Minster once a week preferred.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • substantial experience of the National Lottery Heritage Fund bid-writing process
  • substantial experience using project management software
  • a proven track record in developing organisational sustainability
  • experience of working in churches or other places of worship

You will work closely with James Cameron, Heritage Project Manager, and Canon Dominic Black, Vicar of Hull Minster. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to a project that brings together heritage, faith, music, community, and long-term civic impact in one of Hull’s most significant buildings.

To express interest, please get in touch with James Cameron at james.cameron@hullminster.org.
