About the Project

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a research programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The Programme of Research for Alcohol Care Teams: Impact, Value and Effectiveness (ProACTIVE) is a multi-disciplinary study designed to evaluate the effectiveness, value, and optimal models of Alcohol Care Teams (ACT) across England. Alcohol-related hospital admissions continue to rise, with up to 10% of acute hospital inpatients estimated to be alcohol dependent. Despite this, provision of ACTs varies significantly across the country, and there is currently limited evidence of their effectiveness. The NHS Long Term Plan has committed £26 million to enhance and expand ACT provision in the hospitals with greatest need. Jointly led by Professor Thomas Phillips (University of Hull) and Professor Julia Sinclair (University of Southampton), the ProACTIVE programme will evaluate ACTs at policy, system, and patient levels.

The Role

We are seeking up to two motivated and enthusiastic Research Assistants to join the ProACTIVE research team. Post holders will be based primarily at Scarborough Hospital, working closely with the Principal Investigator, clinical research nurses, and ward teams. This post is offered on an hourly-paid basis (£17.39 per hour) under a Temporary Staffing Service (TSS) contract. Working hours are negotiable and will be flexible to meet both service needs and individual circumstances.

The successful candidates will recruit participants with lived experience of alcohol dependence to a quasi-experimental study (Work Package 2). Responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying eligible patients within the hospital environment
  • Engaging with clinical teams to support recruitment
  • Taking informed consent
  • Administering psychometric questionnaires
  • Collecting and accurately entering research data
  • Supporting the wider research team as needed to deliver project objectives

Post holders will be employed by the University of Hull but an honorary contract with Scarborough Hospital will also be required. While the majority of the work will take place at Scarborough Hospital, some occasional travel to the University of Hull will be necessary for induction, training, and team meetings. Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates living locally or within a reasonable commuting distance.

About You

The ideal candidates will have:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience administering psychometric assessments
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
