The Doctoral College at the University of Hull leads and coordinates postgraduate research education and researcher development across the institution, ensuring all postgraduate researchers receive highâquality, inclusive training aligned with institutional and regulatory requirements. This role is central to designing and delivering the Universityâs Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Research Training, working with Faculties, professional services, supervisors and external partners. The postholder also supports doctoral researchers and oversees the academic review of complex or nonâstandard doctoral applications. The role may be available as a secondment, subject to lineâmanager approval.
In addition to the generic Teaching and Scholarship Band 8 responsibilities, the postholder will provide academic leadership and operational oversight as Programme Director for the Universityâs Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Research Training. The postholder will be responsible for the strategic development, academic quality, coherence and ongoing enhancement of the programme, ensuring alignment with institutional strategy, the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers, UKRI and other funder requirements, and relevant quality assurance frameworks.
The role includes leadership of curriculum design, review and evaluation of accredited researcher development provision, oversight of teaching and learning delivery, teaching across the Level 7 modules delivered by the Doctoral College and monitoring of engagement, progression and outcomes. The postholder will work collaboratively with academic and professional colleagues to ensure an excellent and inclusive postgraduate researcher experience, informed by evaluation, metrics, student feedback and external benchmarking.
The postholder will provide academic leadership to staff contributing to the programme, coordinating teaching teams, contributing to workload planning, mentoring colleagues, and supporting professional development in PGR education. They will play a key role in institutional committees and working groups relating to postgraduate research, researcher development and doctoral education.
In addition, the postholder will contribute to doctoral student support across the lifecycle, working with the Doctoral College to advise on complex cases, suspensions, extensions and progression matters. The role includes academic oversight of special and non-standard doctoral applications, ensuring consistent, fair and academically robust decision-making in line with university regulations and external requirements.
The postholder will represent the University internally and externally in matters relating to postgraduate researcher training, contributing to outreach, recruitment activity, external partnerships and sector networks. They will also contribute to teaching, supervision, scholarship and pedagogic innovation consistent with an academic role at Band 8.

This will be a fixed-term, part-time position working 21.9 hours per week. This role will be carried out by individuals with experience in teaching usually by progression from the corresponding band 7 role. Direct appointments to this level may be made where it is clear the staff have appropriate experience.
At this level, role holdersâ contribution spans scholarship, teaching, and related administration, though the weight allocated to each of these strands will vary from role to role and from time to time for individual role holders.
The role holder will:
- Design and deliver a broad programme of teaching, including identifying current areas for revision and improvement and contributing to the planning, design and development of objectives and materials.
- Conduct individual and collaborative projects including developing scholarly activity and proposals which will be advancing the state of knowledge in their particular discipline.
- Write individually or contribute to publications and present at conferences or other events.
Role holders at this level will be expected to be establishing a reputation nationally within their academic specialism.
Main Work Activities
Teaching and Learning
- Academic leadership and strategic oversight of a University-wide postgraduate programme.
- Design and deliver teaching material across a range of modules or within a subject area using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.
- Supervise student projects, field trips and, where appropriate placements.
- Identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement.

- Develop programme related objectives, projects and proposals.

Relationships and Team Working
- Develop and build internal and external contacts which may include identifying sources of funding, contributing to student recruitment, securing student placements, marketing the institution.
