ROLE AND PURPOSE

To support the Zoo Manager with the management of Hull Culture and Leisure’s zoo and aviary collections across the city, ensuring that all animal care and welfare is carried out to the highest possible standard in line with the latest legislation and good practice guidance. Supporting all operational activity including animal care and welfare, staff management, training, performance monitoring, health and safety and customer care. To actively promote the service to increase visitors to our collections and ensure that income is maximised. To assist the Zoo Manager with the control of resources including budgets.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • To promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and/or vulnerable adults.
  • To assist the Zoo Manager with health and safety, including writing/reviewing risk assessments and updating/reviewing training.
  • To effectively supervise staff to ensure that HCAL Animal Collections and associated facilities are operated in accordance with the standard operating procedures.
  • To take a lead on the day-to-day animal husbandry, health checks and emergency procedures.
  • To ensure that there is a level of security at each site and that all buildings, equipment and facilities are safe and meet the required standard.
  • To assist the Zoo Manager with the management of staff, including staff training, team meetings, communication, staff rotas and effective deployment of staff.
  • To respond to incidents and accidents as required, giving first aid when necessary.
  • To provide accurate and factual records of any accident or incident for further investigation.
  • To ensure that all sites maintain high standards of cleanliness and maintenance.
  • To ensure that animal welfare policies and procedures and husbandry tasks are carried out to the highest standard.
  • To carry out grounds maintenance tasks as and when required to a high standard.
  • To produce, deliver and review documents such as collection plans and conservation plans.
  • To assist with the zoo license process by completing agreed tasks within the allocated timeframe.
  • To assist the Zoo Manager in managing income and performance management.
  • To ensure that sites are clean and welcoming for our visitors.
  • To ensure that faults with buildings and infrastructure are identified and dealt with in a timely fashion.
  • To promote the service by delivering/assisting with a range of conservation events and educational activities throughout the city.
  • To attend/undertake training and development as required.
  • To monitor and feedback on work carried out by contractors.
  • To complete animal records and ensure that statutory paperwork is completed.
  • To deputise for the Zoo Manager as required.
  • There may be a requirement to change the shift/working pattern of the post to meet the needs of the service.
  • You may be required to undertake duties associated with a lower graded position.
  • The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull Culture and Leisure.

Compensation Grades: GRADES 6.

Pay Ranges: £29,540.00 - £32,061.00
