Job Overview
Full-time, Permanent position as a Pest Control Technical Officer within the Environmental Regulation team.
The role involves investigating pest activity, delivering pest control treatments, participating in drainage investigations, and providing expert advice to residents, businesses and partners across the city.
Role and Purpose
Work within a professional team of officers to discharge the Council’s statutory duties and commitments in relation to pest control and drainage.
Provide highly interactive, client‑focused responses to service requests and support the Council’s public health objectives.
- Principal Accountabilities
- Achieve departmental objectives and targets by working effectively as a member of a team and independently.
- Investigate and identify pest problems in domestic, commercial, industrial and public premises and take appropriate action for eradication using pesticides, traps and other equipment.
- Plan and execute survey work and baiting of potential hazard areas for insect or rodent pest eradication, both in response to public requests and as part of routine public health measures.
- Perform pest control proofing work to prevent access to buildings by various pests including birds, squirrels, mice, rats, ants, etc.
- Ensure safe and hygienic removal and disposal of poisons and carcasses in accordance with Department health and safety requirements.
- Maintain a high commitment to health and safety for self, staff, members of the public and non‑target animals, and provide a safe environment for handling toxic chemicals.
- Clear obstructed drains, gullies and water closets by plunging, rodding and testing defective drainage systems with dyes, smoke and CCTV.
- Regularly check allocated vehicles and equipment, ensuring they are in good working order and that stores are maintained.
- Prepare detailed records and reports on the use of toxic chemicals, materials, and the safety and security of pesticides, keeping customers fully informed.
- Comply with statutory obligations and health and safety legislation, and take personal responsibility for health, safety and wellbeing.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Full driving licence with willingness to drive a council van.
- Commitment to pursuing professional pest management qualifications if not already held.
- Excellent customer service skills and a practical, problem‑solving approach.
- Desirable but not essential: prior pest control experience.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a professional team.
