Overview: The role is to lead a team within the Public Protection team of the Public Health and Adult Services Directorate, carrying out safety checks and examinations of consumer goods entering the UK through the Humber Ports, funded by central government.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team conducting compliance import checks to prevent unsafe and dangerous consumer goods and construction products entering the United Kingdom through Humber ports.
  • Manage staff and resources, delivering excellent results and making decisions to support the team’s objectives.
  • Develop targeted initiatives aimed at identifying and intercepting consignments of illegal goods imported through the ports.
  • Engage with partner agencies (OPSS, Border Force, HM Revenue and Customs, Port Health) in intelligence-led operations and ensure effective collaboration and communication.
  • Provide advice and guidance to hauliers and importers of controlled goods regarding the laws governing product safety.
  • Be flexible to work at various locations around the Humber, often at short notice, to meet service demands.
  • Comply with requirements for driving where applicable and support reasonable adjustments if driving is a barrier due to disability.
  • Utilise specialist IT systems and commercial software such as Word, Excel and Outlook as part of the role.

Qualifications / Essential Criteria:

  • Experience as a Trading Standards professional.
  • Proven experience in managing staff with decision-making and resource-management capabilities.
  • Ability to develop targeted initiatives to intercept illegal goods through ports.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to engage with partner agencies and operate in intelligence-led environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, good interpersonal abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability to drive and hold a Full UK Driving Licence (role may require travel); the organisation will make reasonable adjustments for disability.
  • Proficiency with IT systems and software (Word, Excel, Outlook).
