This post involves being part of a team, working with children and young people with complex health needs and disabilities. You will be expected to work with the children during the night supporting with personal care needs, monitoring health needs and assisting to ensure children are safe and comfortable through the night. The post also involves some basic domestic and office duties.
You will need to have some care experience, preferably with children and have the ability to write up records and communicate well with colleagues and senior staff. You will need to follow policies and procedures and undertake necessary training and development opportunities.
ROLE AND PURPOSETo provide personal care, including emotional, physical and practical support for children/young people with learning disabilities and associated physical and sensory impairments. To enable children/young people to enjoy an improved quality of life based on individual care plans.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:- To promote and safeguard the welfare of children, young people and/or vulnerable adults within the Disability Service.
- Statutory Obligations – To contribute to and implement each young person’s individual care plan and risk assessment. To ensure all outcomes are met and identified outcomes achieved and to provide a high quality of care for children with disabilities and complex care needs.
- To attend to the physical needs of children/young people, including dressing, washing and bathing, toileting and other personal care needs. To encourage and help children to undertake personal care tasks for themselves.
- To assist in preparation of light snacks, drinks, and support children/young people where required to eat and drink ensuring dietary needs are met including appropriate choice of food.
- To help prepare and implement individuals care plans and be responsible for ensuring the correct balance of care is provided between undertaking care tasks for the individual and guiding and supporting in the development of daily living skills.
- To support care staff when administering medication as prescribed by the medical practitioner and to maintain appropriate records according with the Home medical policy and departmental procedures.
- To review individual care plans taking into account changing needs and assessment of risk, including liaising with other professionals in the care of the child.
- To be fully knowledgeable with the fire procedures within the home, to know where the fire extinguishers and escape routes are and what action to take in the event of a fire.
- The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated legislation places responsibilities for health and safety on Hull City Council, as your employer and you as an employee of the council. In addition to the Councils overall duties, the post holder has personal responsibility for their own health & safety and that of other employees; additional and more specific responsibilities are identified in the Council’s Corporate H&S policy.
