The Children and Families Disability Team is a busy, city-wide service committed to delivering high-quality support to children and young people with complex biopsychosocial, neurodiverse, medical, and physical complexities, and their families. You will work collaboratively alongside our team of full-time Occupational Therapists, OT Apprentices, and a Practice Lead OT & Team Manager.

Working in partnership with the team of Social Workers and Team Managers to provide specialist holistic assessments and facilitate interventions that make a real difference. As an Occupational Therapist within this team, you will perform specialist OT assessments for children and young people with complex needs to enable them to achieve or maintain maximum functional independence in their daily lives in a safe and meaningful way.

You will carry out comprehensive child and family-centred assessments, which may include moving and handling assessments with children, young people, and their parents/carers, ensuring a holistic solution-finding approach to promote and maximise engagement with activities of daily living, in a safe and meaningful way.

Demonstrate robust clinical reasoning and the ability to provide clear, evidence-based justification for specialist complex equipment provision, in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the principle of Least Restrictive Practice. (Full training and support will be provided where required.)

Have a sound understanding of the Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) and the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1996, as well as other relevant legislation.

Conduct environmental OT assessments, identifying reasonable and practicable adaptations in line with DFG Foundations Criteria, and advise on necessary adaptations to meet identified needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work within a collaborative, multi-agency framework, engaging with professionals across health, education, adaptations teams, social care, and safeguarding services to ensure outcomes that are safe, appropriate, and positive for children and their families.
  • Provide equipment provision and environmental adaptations that empower children and young people to live safely and independently, enabling meaningful engagement in daily activities.
  • Understand the biopsychosocial complexities associated with SEND and neurodiverse diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of relevant legislation, including (but not limited to) the following: Children Act 1989 & 2004, Care Act 2014, Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act 1970, Housing Grants, Construction & Regeneration Act 1996 (DFG), Equality Act 2010, Mental Capacity Act 2005, SEND Code of Practice 2015, Health and Social Care Act 2022, Regulatory Reform (Housing Assistance) Order 2002.

Qualifications
  • Registered Occupational Therapist with HCPC.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding principles and legislation.
