This post is 24 hours per week, ideally working over 3 days, Wednesday to Friday (all day Friday). Additional days/hours to be agreed.

The role of the Business Rates Officer is to provide an efficient service to our business community and to help deliver the administration of billing, collection, and recovery of Business Rates in accordance with statutory provisions and local procedures, maximising revenue and minimising loss.

Duties include dealing with sensitive and confidential information, maintaining systems, and using a range of software packages. The responsibilities of this post include:

  • The efficient and accurate determination of all correct liabilities, valuation changes, and ensuring all charges, including transitional relief where applicable, are correct and in accordance with regulations, legislation, and guidance.
  • Ensuring all received information is correct and reporting any cases of fraud.
  • Carrying out daily administrative activities related to applying the correct reliefs and exemptions.
  • Responding to ratepayers’ correspondence promptly and in line with KPIs and performance standards.
  • Undertaking duties for the collection and recovery of Business Rates, liaising with enforcement agencies and other Council departments as needed.
  • Performing checks and responding to queries in accordance with legislation and service requirements.
  • Assisting with other duties related to the collection and administration of Business Rates, including statutory returns.
