Huish Episcopi Academy is a large, non-selective, mixed secondary school for pupils aged 11-18. The school is very much at the heart of the Somerset Levels, with a catchment area over 200 sq. miles and community partnership with 11 local primary schools. The school has always been conscious of the contrast between the smaller local primary schools and the bustling school environment of a large secondary, so transition is an important part of our approach.At Huish, we offer the full national curriculum with opportunities for our pupils to engage in a broad range of additional activities in sports, music, and the creative arts. We are seeking an exceptional and compassionate professional to join our academy as Safeguarding & Mental Health Lead. This is a key leadership role for someone who is passionate about protecting children, promoting positive mental health, and ensuring every student has access to the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.
Working closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and wider pastoral teams, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and leading our safeguarding, mental health and wellbeing provision. You will champion a proactive and inclusive approach, ensuring that vulnerable students and their families receive timely, effective and coordinated support.
About the Role
As Safeguarding & Mental Health Lead, you will:
- Lead and coordinate safeguarding referrals, interventions and support plans.
- Support the Designated Safeguarding Lead in managing child protection cases and ensuring statutory safeguarding responsibilities are met.
- Oversee and develop the academy's mental health and wellbeing provision.
- Line manage the First Aid and Counselling teams, ensuring high-quality, responsive support services.
- Act as the academy's key contact for the Mental Health Support Team (MHST), coordinating referrals and interventions.
- Build strong partnerships with external agencies including Children's Services, CAMHS, MHST practitioners, school nurses and other support services.
- Analyse safeguarding, attendance, behaviour and wellbeing data to identify trends and inform targeted interventions.
- Promote a whole-school culture where safeguarding, wellbeing and inclusion are central to student success.
- Deliver and support staff training, awareness initiatives and wellbeing programmes across the academy.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has substantial experience supporting vulnerable children, young people and families.
- Has experience managing safeguarding concerns in an educational, social care or children's services setting.
- Demonstrates a strong understanding of safeguarding legislation, child protection procedures and multi-agency working.
- Has experience supporting young people with mental health and emotional wellbeing needs.
- Is highly organised, resilient and able to manage sensitive situations with professionalism and compassion.
- Builds positive relationships with students, families, staff and external partners.
- Shares our commitment to inclusion, safeguarding and achieving the very best outcomes for every student.
A Mental Health First Aid qualification and Designated Safeguarding Lead training are desirable; however, training can be provided for the right candidate.
