If you’re ready to take full ownership of a site’s Health & Safety function and shape a stronger, safer workplace, this role gives you the autonomy and influence to do exactly that.
Based at the Howden Site, you will manage the complete Health & Safety remit, reporting to the Operations Director. This is an opportunity to join a growing third generation family business and lead a function that has a direct impact on the wellbeing of every colleague on site.
What You’ll Do
You’ll run a stand alone, proactive Health & Safety service that strengthens culture, builds awareness, and ensures compliance across the operation. Your work will help teams understand risk, follow safe systems of work, and continuously improve standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partner with senior leaders and line managers to provide clear, practical advice on policies, safe operating procedures and risk assessments.
- Support HR and Technical teams with safety elements of internal and external audits.
- Develop and deliver workplace Health & Safety plans in line with legal requirements.
- Prepare and embed policies and procedures that promote a consistent safety culture.
- Assess practices, equipment and facilities to ensure legal and company compliance.
- Carry out inspections across operations, identifying risks and driving action plans.
- Manage statutory inspections for lifting equipment, fork-lift trucks, fire extinguishers, ladders and racking.
- Lead incident and accident investigations, identifying root causes and prevention measures.
- Deliver training, presentations, inductions and toolbox talks for employees, contractors and visitors.
- Promote hazard and near miss reporting and maintain associated systems and action logs.
- Develop emergency procedures and maintain Fire Log Book records.
- Conduct risk assessments, maintain accurate Safety Data Sheets for COSHH, and update safe operating procedures.
- Chair monthly H&S Committee meetings and maintain monthly and quarterly KPIs.
What You’ll Bring
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- NEBOSH General Certificate.
- Previous experience in Health & Safety management and training.
- Strong attention to detail and a practical, motivated approach.
- Good computer skills and the ability to communicate clearly with all levels.
- Ability to complete tasks fully and think strategically.
- Basic understanding of Occupational Health protocols.
- Positive, collaborative attitude.
Desired:
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health.
- IOSH membership.
- Extensive and up to date Health & Safety legislation knowledge.
- Experience in Health & Safety management.
Hours, Pay and Benefits
- 25 hours per week, flexible.
- Flexibility required to support a 7 day operation.
- Up to £15 per hour.
- 28 days holiday per year (pro rata), including bank holidays.
- Must follow all procedures in the Employee Handbook and Health & Safety Handbook.
