An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineer with a chemistry or chemical engineering background and an interest in computer integrated control systems for labs, scientific instrumentation and process technology, the equipment being used within laboratory and small-scale pilot plant environments.

As a project engineer with a chemistry background, you would join a highly innovative scientific engineering and technology business specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke laboratory and pilot-scale equipment systems used globally across the chemical and process industries. This is an excellent opportunity for a Chemistry or Chemical Engineering graduate (or equivalent industry professional) looking to develop a career within complex scientific instrumentation, process systems and project delivery.

The role offers exposure to cutting-edge laboratory technology, multidisciplinary engineering teams and international customer projects. As a chemist or chemical engineer working as part of an established Project Engineering team, you will support and manage projects from initial order stage through to build, testing, installation and customer handover. This project engineer role is a varied and hands-on role involving close collaboration with engineering, software, production, procurement and quality teams to ensure successful delivery of highly specialised scientific systems. The role is predominantly office based with occasional UK and European travel linked to customer installations and project support (Travel once per month).

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the planning, build and commissioning of bespoke scientific instrumentation systems
  • Produce project documentation including specifications, process flow diagrams, bills of materials and testing documentation
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical and software engineering teams throughout project delivery
  • Act as a technical liaison between internal departments, suppliers and customers
  • Lead project update meetings and maintain clear communication with stakeholders
  • Coordinate testing, validation and troubleshooting activities during build and commissioning stages
  • Analyse technical and performance data to support problem solving and continuous improvement
  • Support customer installation activities and provide end-user training when required
  • Maintain accurate production and project documentation including ERP system updates
  • Contribute towards continuous improvement and engineering best practice initiatives
Skills and Experience
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related scientific discipline
  • Previous hands on commercial laboratory, process engineering or scientific instrumentation experience, fluid/process systems or pilot plant environments
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of laboratory processes, analytical methods and interpretation of results
  • Organised, methodical and able to manage multiple activities simultaneously
  • Comfortable working within multidisciplinary technical teams
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office applications
  • Driving license
  • ERP system knowledge (SAP Business One advantageous)
