An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Avionics Systems Design Engineer to join a highly regarded engineering organisation.

This role is responsible for leading the systems design, integration and certification of complex aircraft avionics systems, supporting both new developments and modifications to existing platforms.

As a systems avionics design engineer will take ownership of avionics system design activities from initial concept through to certification and continued airworthiness.

As a senior systems design engineer this would suit an engineer with strong avionics systems knowledge, ideally gained within the aerospace sector, who enjoys working across the full engineering lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and integration of aircraft avionics systems from concept through to implementation.
  • Translate customer and operational requirements into robust engineering solutions.
  • Produce detailed electrical and avionics system designs in accordance with applicable certification standards.
  • Develop wiring schematics, electrical installation drawings and harness designs using CAD software.
  • Ensure avionics installations integrate successfully with existing aircraft systems and operational philosophy.
  • Support aircraft modification programmes and new product development activities.
  • Apply Systems Engineering principles, methodologies and best practice throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, technical reports, compliance evidence and design records.
  • Support certification activities in accordance with EASA, UK CAA and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with certification specialists, manufacturing, production and flight test teams to deliver compliant engineering solutions.
  • Participate in system verification, validation and qualification activities.
  • Conduct engineering investigations, resolve technical issues and provide support for in-service aircraft.
  • Support continued airworthiness activities and engineering change management throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Ensure all engineering work complies with Design Organisation Approval (DOA) procedures and configuration management requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Aerospace Engineering, Avionics, Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Significant experience designing and integrating aircraft avionics systems.
  • Strong understanding of aircraft electrical and avionics architectures.
  • Experience working within regulated aerospace or defence environments.
  • Good knowledge of aircraft certification requirements including EASA/CAA Part 21J Design Organisation Approval (DOA).

Understanding of CS/FAR 27 and/or CS/FAR 29 certification requirements.

  • Experience of equipment qualification standards and certification processes.
  • Knowledge of aircraft systems safety assessment and software safety analysis.
  • Experience producing electrical schematics, installation drawings and wiring harness designs.
  • Proficient with Auto CAD and other electrical CAD packages.
  • Experience using configuration management and design lifecycle management tools.
  • Military aviation or defence project experience.
  • Knowledge of airborne communications, navigation, surveillance or mission systems.
  • Experience with electrical load analysis or EMC/EMI considerations.
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as DOORS or equivalent.
