The Opportunity

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a key role in developing bespoke automation systems, working closely with customers, applications teams and engineering specialists to create practical, innovative and commercially viable solutions. You will be involved at the front end of projects, helping define customer requirements, develop system concepts, identify technical risks and ensure designs are ready for successful delivery. This role offers significant variety, technical challenge and the opportunity to influence the design and development of advanced automated systems used within highly sophisticated manufacturing environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design bespoke automated machinery, robotics systems and special purpose equipment using SolidWorks
  • Develop automation concepts, machine layouts and mechanical system designs
  • Define project scope, requirements and technical specifications
  • Produce engineering documentation and handover packages for detailed design teams
  • Identify technical risks and develop practical engineering solutions
  • Work closely with electrical, controls, robotics and manufacturing engineering teams
  • Support customer meetings, technical reviews and design presentations
  • Conduct site visits to gather project requirements and evaluate upgrade opportunities
  • Contribute to design reviews, engineering change activities and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support design-for-manufacture, cost optimisation and system performance improvements

What We're Looking For

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Strong SolidWorks design experience
  • Experience designing automated machinery, robotics systems, automation equipment or special purpose machinery
  • Proven background in mechanical design engineering within a manufacturing or automation environment
  • Understanding of design-for-manufacture principles
  • Experience working with PLM and ERP systems
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively
  • Comfortable working directly with customers and cross-functional engineering teams
