As an experienced PCB Design Engineer with team leader experience (small team), you will join a leading technology solutions provider applying your expertise in PCB / PCBa layout for a hands-on team leader and PCB design role to deliver innovative, high-performance products for a range of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The scope of projects will be vast and challenging whilst mentoring and leading some of the more junior members of the team.
As a solid PCB, PCBa designer & team leader, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team (Mechanical, Electronic, PCB, and Software Engineers) and contribute to your pertinent stages of the product lifecycle from initial contact with the customer through quotation, conception and design to manufacture. You will develop a broad and versatile background and take on board some managerial responsibilities with applications across areas like Automotive, Defense, Renewable Energy, Consumer Goods, Aerospace, Medical, and R&D. This role is remote, with occasional travel to the South East office when required (approximately once a month).
Key Responsibilities:
- Explicit responsibility for running the PCB Design Team
- Workload planning, coordination, and contractor management
- Commercial responsibility (quotations, negotiation, contracts)
- Clear expectation of line management + delivery ownership
- Customer-facing technical consultation
- Layout quotations, negotiation, and contract management
- Liaison with CAD vendors, IT, and external contractors
- Engagement from initial customer contact through manufacture
- Develop PCB designs supporting both new and maintaining current products
- Creating complete design packages, to include all PCB design data
- Read, understand, and interpret engineering drawings & electronic circuit symbols
- Create single image and panelised designs reflecting in-house manufacturing rules
- Review and check design data to ensure production standards are maintained
- Working confidently and liaising with PCB and project design team members
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum HNC/ HND or engineering degree level qualification
- PCB design must be the majority of your role
- Any experience of leading, mentoring, managing others for a team leader role
- Industries of interest: Defense & Aerospace, Homeland Security, Space, IP development platforms (Certified Interconnect Designer) CID or CID+ certification
- Proven experience of at least one of the following: Altium Designer, Cadence Orcad /Allegro, Siemens PADS
- Experience of designing with high-speed digital design, analogue or complex circuits, including fine pitch components (BGA) and high pin count devices
- Understanding electronic design documentation (schematic and layout definitions)
- Familiarity with PCB fabrication and assembly processes
- Understanding of Design for Manufacture / Test (DFM, DFT)
- Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, Thermal Analysis (desirable)
- EMC, IPC & ECSS standards, Panelisation aligned to in-house manufacturing rules
Desirable Skills:
- Understanding of Product Data Management (PDM) systems
- PCB routing for impedance control, power planes and signal integrity
- Experience of EMC requirements for PCB design
- Knowledge of UL, FCC, and CE certification
