A new position for an experienced Controls Project Systems Engineer (PLC exp) is urgently required for a leading engineering services company to join a strong well-established team for upcoming projects. Clients work within the energy/chemicals sector, focusing on safety solutions that satisfy the critical nature of customer plant sites and processes.
As a Controls Project Systems Engineer, you will be involved in consulting in the field of systems engineering and general system design and panel build services. The role is mainly office-based, apart from site visits to clients (must be able to drive). Teamwork is pivotal to the success of the company, with site visits typically within the UK but may occasionally require worldwide travel.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Manage PLC-based system design and consultancy projects from point of sale through initial design and manufacture to site commissioning.
- Responsible for a wide range of engineering design and project management tasks, with importance placed on reading and interpreting technical documents, including industry standards, client specifications, P&IDs, and logic diagrams.
- Confident user of general office software (e.g. Microsoft Word/Excel) for preparing various in-depth project-related documentation (e.g. specifications, reports, calculations).
- Critically review and mark-up documents/drawings generated by others, providing constructive feedback.
- Supervision of workshop technicians during the system build of your own projects.
- Rigorously testing, applying problem-solving and analytical techniques to plan and carry out appropriate system tests.
- General control of project work, including look-ahead planning, control of project budgets and schedules, change control, estimating activities, project document management, and progress reporting.
- Review of client specifications and other national/international standards to ensure project compliance.
- Development of functional requirements specifications for control systems, SIS, F&G, and instrumentation.
- PLC, HMI & SCADA application software development.
- Participation in design reviews, including HAZOP/LOPA, hazardous area, etc.
Skills and Experiences:
- HNC/HND or Degree qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Several years' experience in PLC configuration and application software development (e.g. ABB AC500-S/800xA, Emerson DeltaV, Triconex, HIMA F60/HiQuad X, Siemens S7-Failsafe, Allen Bradley ControlLogix/GuardLogix).
- Customer-facing with great communication skills from a technical and commercial perspective.
- HMI/SCADA configuration (e.g. Siemens WinCC/PCS7/Emerson DeltaV).
- Industrial communications system architectural design and selection/configuration of appropriate protocols (e.g., Profinet/Profibus/Modbus TCP & RTU/OPC).
- The ability to conduct site surveys and brownfield verification of existing control systems and field instrumentation.
- Experience in the planning and delivery of technical projects is essential.
- Essential: UK Driving Licence.
- Desirable: Industrial Instrumentation experience.
- Understanding of Burner Management, Emergency Shutdown, Fire & Gas Detection.
- Good working knowledge of the Functional Safety Standards BS EN 61508/61511.
- Certified Functional Safety Engineer/Professional status welcomed.
- TUV Functional Safety certification would be preferred but not essential.
