About Hudson Lighting

At Hudson Lighting, we manufacture outdoor lighting products used in domestic gardens worldwide. Our products are primarily sold to trade professionals such as electricians, landscape contractors, and garden designers.

What is it like working here?

We are a small, close-knit team of four based in Coulsdon, Surrey. Each day begins with a 2-minute warm-up and morning meeting where we review plans, challenges, and expectations. We operate a 2-second lean culture that encourages improvement and innovation in everything we do. The intern will have their own office pod for design work, with practical work completed on the shop floor. Most required tools are already available, and additional tools can be purchased if needed. While independence is encouraged, support and guidance will be provided by Chris Hudson, the founder. Assistance can also be given with hardware and coding tasks.

Hours of Work

8:00am – 3:30pm (with a 30-minute break). Morning meetings begin promptly at 8:00am.

Getting Here

By train: Coulsdon South rail station is an 8-minute walk from the office, served by trains from London Bridge and London Victoria. By car: Onsite parking is available.

What will you be doing?

You will design and build a lighting test rig to evaluate the performance and durability of our products. The rig will include both electronic and mechanical systems to automatically move lighting products through several stages of testing, with results recorded to a database.

  • Reviewing our current physical testing process and identifying issues.
  • Researching and selecting appropriate devices (e.g. sensors, microcontrollers such as Arduino or ESP32).
  • Testing and recording results including:
  • Light output (lumens)
  • Light colour (kelvin)
  • Ambient and fitting temperature (after 24 hours)
  • Voltage and current (to confirm wattage)
  • IP68 underwater testing
  • Testing and calibrating to create a fully functioning, free-floating test system.
  • Building the first mechanical rig to move the fitting through three stages (two flat stages and one underwater).
  • Adding pre-designed sensor sets and break-beam sensors to trigger stages.
  • Connecting the system to our web interface to upload results by serial number.
  • Testing and iterating until the system operates fault-free.
  • Experience Gained

    • Designing and building a real-world mechatronics project from start to finish.
    • Gaining hands-on experience with workshop tools and mechanical rig construction.
    • Learning how to improve efficiency, durability, and safety in testing systems.
    • Developing continuous improvement skills through our 2-second lean culture.

    Essential Skills

    • Knowledge of Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32/8266, PLC or similar.
    • CAD skills – ideally Fusion 360 (SolidWorks experience transferable).
    • Strong understanding of electronics and sensors.

    Experience Level

This role is ideal for master’s students or recent graduates in mechatronics or related engineering fields.
