Job overview

HUC is seeking an experienced and influential Non-Executive Director – Performance & Operations to join its Board and provide independent oversight, constructive challenge and strategic insight across organisational performance and operational delivery.

This is an opportunity for an experienced senior leader to use their expertise to shape the future direction of HUC, supporting the Board to ensure that strategic ambitions translate into high-quality, effective and sustainable services.

The successful candidate will bring significant senior operational leadership experience within a complex, multi-site environment, a strong understanding of performance management, service improvement, operational planning, transformation and KPIs.

As an independent Board member, you'll contribute an objective perspective, challenge constructively and provide assurance on operational performance, service quality, capacity, resilience and risk. You will work collaboratively with fellow Board members and executives, helping HUC maintain a strong focus on patients, communities, staff and stakeholders.

This is a strategic governance role rather than a day-to-day operational position. You will need to demonstrate sound independent judgement, commercial acumen, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to understand complex issues and make well-informed strategic decisions.

Experience of healthcare or social care, the NHS, or working within the geographies in which HUC operates would be desirable

Main duties of the job

As a Non-Executive Director, you will:

  • Provide strategic oversight and constructive challenge on organisational strategy, operational capacity and delivery.
  • Review and challenge performance information, operational plans, KPIs and service delivery.
  • Provide Board-level oversight of performance, quality, safety, capacity, resilience and risk.
  • Bring senior operational leadership expertise to support service improvement and transformation.
  • Contribute to significant organisational decisions and effective governance.
  • Promote patient-centred services, with a strong focus on quality, safety and patient experience.
  • Build effective relationships with key stakeholders and act as an ambassador for HUC.
  • Contribute to Board and committee activity, including the Performance and Service Delivery Committee.
  • Exercise independent judgement and ensure decisions reflect the interests of HUC and its communities.
  • Support executive remuneration and succession planning where appropriate.
  • Oversee health, safety, safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Maintain confidentiality and provide oversight of data protection.l
  • Contribute to Board effectiveness and ongoing governance development.

Education and Qualifications

  • Degree-or equivalent and/or professional qualification
  • Degree in finance/business/management /clinical qualification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Ability to understand complex strategic issues, analyse, resolve difficult problems and make strategic decisions
  • Experience of performance management and KPI’s
  • Commercial acumen
  • Significant senior operational leadership experience in a complex, multi-site service environment, including responsibility for service performance and improvement
  • Relevant operational planning experience, including service delivery, resilience and transformation
  • Board-level working, ideally as a Board member
  • Experience of Healthcare/social care sector
  • Knowledge of the NHS in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire
  • Previous Board Director experience, either Executive and ideally, Non-Executive
  • A recognised operational or management qualification
  • Additional experience or expertise in areas such as clinical practice, patient safety, workforce or organisational transformation

  • Evidence of successful working within and across whole organisational teams
  • Leadership using sound, independent judgment
  • Proven relationship building and ambassadorial skills
  • Politically astute, with the ability to grasp relevant issues and understand relationships between interested parties
  • Customer or Patient Facing Experience
