With the significant growth in hyperscale computing we are expanding our team at Huber + Suhner Polatis to meet increased demand. We produce market‑leading optical circuit switches for advanced fibre optic connectivity in the communications, industrial and government sectors. The engineering department is the development engine of the business, taking new product ideas from concept into volume manufacture. The department consists of Systems, Mechanical, Electronic and Software Engineering teams focused on development, and a New Product Introduction team focused on release to manufacture. The Electronic Design Engineer reports to the Electronic Design Manager to deliver new and updated electronic designs as part of the Huber + Suhner Product Evolution Process. The role involves developing electronics circuits and systems architectures to support product development of leading‑edge technologies for the next generation of resilient optical switching products.
Responsibilities
- Deliver hardware design from concept through to successful delivery of product into manufacturing.
- Collaborate with mechanical, software and system engineers to find solutions to customer requirements.
- Implement DfX as needed to ensure a robust supply chain and manufacturing process.
- Ensure adherence to the relevant quality systems and engineering processes.
- Review electronic requirements and create or review compliance matrices.
- Conduct electronic architecture reviews, simulation and prototyping to analyse concept designs.
- Perform PCB layout design using Altium, conduct component lifecycle analysis, maintain component database, create new parts, and peer‑review work of other engineers.
- Design and implement electronic schematics for digital embedded systems.
- Create test plans to validate new designs or design iterations.
- Validate testing and qualification of resilient hardware and firmware designs.
- Support other design areas during the product development lifecycle.
Your profile
- A dynamic candidate with a good academic record.
- Degree (or higher) in Electronic or Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
- 4–5+ years of industrial experience with a proven track record of delivering complex products against demanding timescales.
- Experience using PCB schematic and layout tools.
- Scientific thinker and problem solver.
- Continuous learner, always keeping knowledge up to date with the latest technology trends.
- Design experience in key functional blocks such as power supplies, digital communication, controllers, embedded design, analogue circuits, and complex digital circuits.
- Delivery focused individual, seeking ways to prove designs and provide evidence to support engineering hypotheses.
- Full lifecycle experience: capable of taking design from concept to full product delivery.
- Strong digital design skills, including modern communications for robust scalable intra‑circuit designs (I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet).
- Strong problem‑solving and debugging skills to root‑cause bugs or design issues.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience developing scalable, robust hardware architecture.
- Experience using Altium Designer.
- Proficient at modelling new concepts and designs.
- Embedded systems design experience with ARM cores and development of secure systems (secure boot, Trusted Protocol Module 2.0).
- Experience working on mixed‑signal PCB designs.
- Experience running detailed verification tests on systems or PCB assemblies containing complex electronics and software/firmware configurations.
