At Huawei Ipswich Research Center we design and develop a range of active and passive components in III‑V semiconductors and on hybrid integrated photonics platforms. Huawei Ipswich Research Centre is looking for a Design Engineer with experience in the design and characterisation of optoelectronic devices. You will be part of the Design Team, and support research and development projects on III‑V optical chips and their RF interfaces. The role will involve idea generation, simulation, design and analysis. You will be working in close cooperation with a wide team of experts in design, fabrication and testing and support transfer research and technology projects to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Communicate with customers and other designers in order to define technical delivery work-packages for projects.
- Take ownership of technical project decisions and technical leadership of the project development team.
- Collaborate with colleagues in Design, Fabrication, and Test departments to plan and gather data efficiently and ensure experimental verification meets the project goals.
- Carry out RF simulation of semiconductor materials, III‑V chips, carriers and integrated systems to understand loss, reflection, crosstalk etc to meet project needs.
- Implement machine learning techniques to accelerate and automate simulation needs, and understand goals and limitations to existing methods or tools.
- Delivering insight and idea generation based on conference attendance and state of the art review of literature.
- Automate mask layout and PDK generation based on project needs and input from new process development blocks.

Required
- PhD in a relevant semiconductor or device design topic.
- Deep knowledge of optoelectronic device physics, alongside familiarity with simulation tools and processes.
- Ability to work independently, manage time on multiple projects.
- Exceptional skills in data analysis, capability to communicate complex information within organizations.
- Strong Python coding skills.
Desired
- 3+ years in relevant field/photonics field in industry or academia developing photonic devices.
- Hands‑on knowledge of mask layout or PDK generation.
- Expertise in electromagnetic simulation and high frequency design of devices and modules.
- Familiarity with epitaxy and fabricating process of III‑V optoelectronic devices.
- Skilled in automation of simulation tools or machine learning.
- Optical communication system understanding for DC, Metro and Long‑haul links.
