We are looking for a full-time Engineer to support the growth of our Manufacturing Engineering capability.

The successful candidates will be supporting HSSMI’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 manufacturing clients with the concept development, process engineering and layout of new and retooled facilities to support their business needs, with a focus on delivering excellence in all Industrial Engineering aspects.

Principal accountabilities:

• The role is to support the team in your solution area in the delivery of impactful projects for clients across the manufacturing, EV and wider industrial sectors, in the UK and overseas.
• To apply manufacturing and process engineering knowledge (e.g. process mapping, line design, Bill of Process) to support clients' facility and production improvement projects.
• To be able to independently manage the delivery of tasks and work packages on commercial and research projects, drawing on support from senior colleagues where needed.
• To directly manage customer requirements on assigned projects, ensuring these are clearly understood, tracked and delivered against.
• To write high-quality reports and support dissemination activities of HSSMI’s work.
• Support the development of commercial proposals as well as identifying new individual leads during delivery.
• Generating intellectual property for the company on programs.
• Support the marketing team to disseminate project outputs and services of your solution area.
• Support the writing of research bids to ensure sustainability of the team.
• Working directly with clients, internal stakeholders, and third-party suppliers to define and independently manage requirements on projects, seeking support from senior colleagues for complex or escalated issues.
• Responsibility for independently managing work packages and tasks in the specified technical area, with support available from the project lead or Senior Engineer when required.
• Keeping up to date and delivering projects and assigned tasks to budget, quality and time.
• Supporting development of research proposals, contributing to consortium building, and project management.
• Delivering industrial research and commercial work around new technologies.
• Confidently presenting new ideas and concepts to stakeholders or to the wider public.

Job context

Engineers work directly and closely with our customers and stakeholders, independently managing requirements and delivering high-quality technical deliverables with support available from senior colleagues as needed.

They will actively engage in research, data gathering and the creation of new knowledge and models for HSSMI’s work themes, support the planning and coordination of engineering input from all contributors, own the delivery of assigned technical tasks and work packages, and disseminate interim and final results through project reviews and wider presentations.

Knowledge & Experience

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant engineering or manufacturing discipline, plus circa 1-3 years’ relevant industrial or manufacturing engineering experience.
• Practical experience of manufacturing and process engineering, including process mapping, process flow design, and development of Bill of Process (BOP), Bill of Materials (BOM) and Bill of Sequence (BOS), within a manufacturing or production environment.
• Confident in planning and organising own work to meet timed deliverables, escalating where support is needed.
• Excellent communication skills - written, verbal listening and presentation.
• Can work independently and in team environments.
• A flexible approach to cope with frequent change.
• A high level of motivation, initiative and creativity.
• Good written and spoken English and technical report writing capability.
• Some experience of managing project tasks, timelines and customer requirements.
• Experience of developing innovative ideas in the manufacturing context.
• Good understanding of production processes, lean manufacturing methodologies and Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), applied within an industrial or production environment.
• Experience of costing manufacturing equipment and processes, including OPEX and CAPEX assessment.
• Comfortable contributing to and helping facilitate workshops and project meetings.
• Confident engaging directly with customers and suppliers, with support available from senior colleagues for more complex or high-level discussions.
• An effective communicator, able to identify project or technical risks and raise these promptly and appropriately with the project lead or client.
• Willing to go above and beyond to meet client requirements and expectations.
• Knowledge and experience of dissemination to both internal and external stakeholders.
