The below job description will outline this position of Principal/Lead Electrical Design Engineer.
Typically, this person will be responsible for the design, specification, and approval testing of marine electrical systems and equipment supplied to naval customers. The role involves developing detailed technical documentation, drawings, and procedures, ensuring compliance with contractual and company standards.
Duties and responsibilities of the Principal/Lead Electrical Design Engineer:
- Prepare electrical schematics, wiring, and block diagrams using 2D CAD and specialist electrical design software (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, WSCAD, etc.)
- Create and maintain detailed technical specifications, commissioning plans, and system test procedures for marine electrical and control systems
- Provide technical guidance and support to both internal teams and external customers
- Review and coordinate technical documentation from suppliers and customers, particularly regarding motors, drives, and control panel designs
- Support tender activities including estimating, specification development, and compliance review
- Perform electrical calculations related to equipment sizing, harmonic emissions, and arc flash safety assessments
- Oversee configuration and control strategies for motor variable speed drive systems
- Identify and contribute to research, development, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Investigate product safety and technical issues using structured problem-solving methods
- Manage supplier relationships, approve test results, and ensure compliance with specifications
- Undertake additional technical duties as required by the business
Qualifications and requirements for the Principal/Lead Electrical Design Engineer:
- Degree (BEng/BSc) in Electrical or Control Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Strong user proficiency in electrical CAD systems (AutoCAD, EPLAN, etc.)
- Experience creating control panel layouts and engineering bills of materials
- Solid understanding of electrical and mechanical principles, ideally within a marine or highly regulated environment
- Proven record of technical project delivery to quality, cost, and schedule targets
- Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Confident communicator, able to work collaboratively with suppliers, customers, and internal teams
- Experience working with design verification and validation processes (FMECA, HAZOP, ARM analysis)
- Knowledge of AC induction/PM motor control systems and variable speed drive technology
- Understanding of EMC and harmonic emission control standards
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with configuration management and engineering change processes
- Committed to quality, health, safety, and environmental standards
