The below job description outlines the position of Workshop Supervisor (Marine Engineering):
Typically, this person will support and lead a marine engineering team who are responsible for routine maintenance and defect rectification across a diverse fleet of vessels ranging from RIB's to survey vessels reaching 18m in length.
Duties and responsibilities of the Workshop Supervisor (Marine Engineering):
- To manage and control the workshop team, the workshop operation and workload ensuring high standards of health & safety and high levels of efficiency.
- You will be the main interface between the workshop team and the ME superintendents.
- Manage the timely provision and availability of spare parts and materials necessary for the workshop team to undertake their work with the minimum disruption and eliminate discontinuous working wherever possible.
- In consultation with the ME Superintendents, co-ordinate the servicing, planned maintenance and defect rectification for the fleet of vessels, pontoons and other specialist equipment, in compliance with MCA, PLA’s TFS and Class rules etc., to ensure availability of essential vessels on a 24-hour 7-day-per week basis.
- This will include managing the maintenance of lifting appliances and pressure systems, to the requirements of the HSE and MCA.
- Using initiative, experience and judgement, evaluate operational requirements and instruct the Marine Engineering Technicians, Trainees and Apprentices, to ensure that work is prioritised and accomplished in good time.
- Arrange and ensure 24 x 7 support by staff via call out and on exceptional occasions provide back-up support by contractors.
- Co-ordinate the work of the technical staff, including overtime, to ensure most economical use of resources.
- Work with the vessel operator departments to arrange access to the vessels and all necessary working hours, space and equipment (including safe access equipment) to ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Work with the ME Superintendents to ensure appropriate prioritisation and distribution of work.
- For the workshops and other working areas, carry out workplace inspections, Health & Safety, PUWER and COSHH assessments as necessary and maintain accurate records.
- Control access to the workshop/s to eliminate risks to untrained persons.
- Liaise with the Marine Stores team, to ensure timely availability of service and other urgent spares.
- Manage the provision of Salvage Engineer as required, by controlling the leave/absence of the suitably qualified ME Technicians for safe operation and maintenance of the diverse and complex machinery and equipment on board the Salvage Vessel.
- Expenditure request and authorisation within Delegations of Authority using generally defined principles, for routine maintenance and defect rectification procedures.
- Preparation of reports of technical, contractual and budgetary matters within the scope of duties.
Qualifications and requirements for the Workshop Supervisor (Marine Engineering):
- HNC in a relevant discipline and with 5 years of “hands-on” experience.
- An alternative recognised formal qualification (possibly ONC) plus substantial relevant experience or an MCA Second Class Marine Engineer Officer’s certificate and suitable shore experience may also satisfy the requirements.
- Hold an IOSH Managing Safely qualification.
- Hold a full UK driving license.
