Location - London or Birmingham

Salary Birmingham: “Base salary: £46,406pa to c£54,595pa depending on skills and experience

Salary London: “Base salary: £50,119pa to c£58,963pa depending on skills and experience

As an Acoustic Engineer at HS2 you will be responsible for providing specialist support to ensure the HS2 railway meets its sound, noise and vibration commitments by defining, integrating, and assuring acoustic requirements across all sub‑systems, providing progressive confidence that the end‑state railway complies with the Environmental Minimum Requirements and delivers acoustic comfort for passengers, staff, and lineside communities delivery programme.

About the role:

  • Apply acoustics expertise to support the development and implementation of acoustics requirements, standards and specifications across infrastructure, rail systems, buildings and operations.
  • Support acoustics system integration by contributing to route‑wide and local modelling, interfaces and coordination activities to ensure acoustic performance is appropriately addressed.
  • Support design assurance, verification and validation activities by reviewing contractor submissions and data attending design reviews and contributing to HS2 assurance processes.
  • Support engagement with internal teams, contractors and external stakeholders to address acoustics and vibration considerations and resolve issues.
  • Support the management of acoustics assumptions, data, contributing to consistency and robustness of noise and vibration assessments.
  • Own and manage acoustics risk and related mitigation (cross‑disciplinary where required), so that the risk of missing EMR, U&A or policy objectives is proactively reduced throughout the lifecycle.
  • Support the application and development of acoustics standards, tools, methodologies and guidance to ensure a consistent and auditable approach.
  • Support delivery of environmental, planning and operational outcomes, including compliance with HS2 noise policy, EMR, U&A commitments and Schedule 17 requirements.
  • Contribute to value for money, innovation and continuous improvement by supporting the application of research, emerging standards and best practice in acoustics.
  • Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.

About You:

Skills

  • Ability to provide specialist technical support on discipline-specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to project development/ delivery teams and seeking further guidance from the Senior Acoustic Engineer where necessary or other Subject Matter Experts.
  • Capable of being a Standard Owner, working under the guidance of the Standard Discipline Owner.
  • Ability to provide technical and commercial management to support project development/delivery teams, working under line manager supervision.
  • Ability to communicate discipline specific technical ideas to colleagues, based largely on examples of application.
  • Ability to apply and articulate principles relating to standards, safety and the environment.
  • Ability to apply principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understands the approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation and knowing when to seek guidance from Subject Matter Experts.
  • Ability to technically assess and review acoustic deliverables.
  • Ability to prepare technical responses to Technical Queries and Requests for Information.
  • Ability to support Senior Acoustic Engineers in writing technical documents and strategy concerning acoustics and vibration.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret technical acoustic data and prepare concise technical documentation.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the mechanisms of noise and vibration generation and control from railway operation at very high-speed including, but not limited to: aeroacoustics, rolling noise generation, track vibration and ground vibration.
  • Knowledge of the mechanisms of noise and vibration generation and control from stationary systems and depot operations.
  • Knowledge of acoustical engineering technology, building acoustics and infrastructure design.
  • Applicable UK construction regulations including CDM requirements.
  • Application of the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment.
  • Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience.

Experience:

  • Experience in application of noise and vibration control measure on High-Speed Railway.
  • Experience in application of noise and vibration control from stationary systems.
  • Experience in building acoustics and Public Announcement / Voice Alarm (PA/VA) design.
