As an Environmental Specialist at HS2 you will be responsible for providing environmental technical support for the future operations of HS2. This role will also support the maintenance and further development of the HS2 Environmental Management System as the company evolves. The role will provide environmental sustainability support for the HS2 operations functions and for the maintenance and improvements to the HS2 Environmental Management System (EMS). It will be responsible for the development of strategies and process for HS2 to deliver on its environmental sustainability requirements (including the HS2 Act) and maximise its opportunities during operations. This is an excellent opportunity to shape how HS2 will run its operations in the future.
About the role:
- Provide environmental technical advice to the operations teams within HS2
- Support the Senior Environmental Specialist with developing a strategy to deliver on our environmental requirements and maximise our opportunities for the operational phase
- Support the operations teams as the receiving authority of environmental information, consents and other requirements during handover and transition from main works (civils and station contracts) and rail systems.
- To be responsible for supporting environmental technical assurance for the operations contracts through production, checking and submission of assurance evidence for technical stage gates, assuring that deliverables comply with the technical and sponsor requirements, environmental commitments, environmental law and regulations;
- Identifying and acting on emerging operational environmental risks and opportunities from HS2 design and construction;
- Support procurement activities for Infrastructure Maintenance, Station operations and Operations contracts;
- To be accountable for supporting the Senior Environmental Specialist with internal and external reporting of environmental matters;
- Maintain the function of the EMS to ISO14001. Identify and act upon opportunities for improvement;
- Provide support to L&P colleagues on environmental issues e.g. environmental due diligence for land acquisitions, liaising with topic specialists
- Fulfil the function of the Senior Environmental Specialist as required; and
- Actively promote and embed Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work, and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
About You:
Skills
- Complex problem solving: identifying complex problems, review, analyse and interpret a wide range of information and evaluate options with ability to implement solutions consistently
- Decision making: ability to gather and synthesise information, identify options and apply judgement based on logic and reason and make use of a variety of analytical approaches to provide relevant information to suppliers, stakeholders and decision makers using key facts and data.
- Technical Leadership: specialist technical support and leadership on all discipline-specific scientific, technical and environmental principles with ability to identify instances in which to seek further guidance from Subject Matter Expert or others.

Communication skills: ability to communicate most discipline-specific technical ideas to colleagues, based largely on examples of application.
Knowledge
- Understanding of the Regulatory/Legislative Framework relevant to HS2
- Knowledge of environmental management systems
- Commercial awareness including understanding of cost delivery, schedule targets and the need to deliver an integrated solution that meets all functional requirements

Chartered Environmentalist/Membership of an appropriate professional institution or the equivalent experience
Experience:
- Experience in managing multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental standards, activity on large complex major projects/ programmes within a complex infrastructure programme
- Experience in supporting the development and implementation of environmental sustainability policies and strategies

Experience of managing competing project, engineering and environmental demands, with cost and schedule implications.
