We have an opportunity for a Materials Engineer to join our South Heath Earthworks team. Reporting into our earthworks materials manager, you will be responsible for ensuring quality control related to earthworks construction of high speed railway works.
About our role
- Monitor earthworks construction (excavation, fill, compaction) ensuring compliance with the Specification.
- Identification of dissolution features and subsequent investigation to assist the Designer.
- Undertake daily inspections of earthworks operations including soil stabilisation.
- Liaise with site engineers to ensure ITP criteria are fully adhered to.
- Oversee field and laboratory testing of soils and aggregates, review test data, classify excavated material and assist in the approval process for reuse.
- Review, analyse and report on the data to assist with compilation of quality documentation.
- Investigate and resolve material non-conformance issues.
- Liaise with site managers, engineers, designers and subcontractors as required.
- Fulfil Health & Safety responsibilities by adhering to the Company’s Health & Safety Policy and Management Plans, and all Company Policies and Procedures.
What we are looking for…
- Degree in geotechnical / geological engineering or similar with 2 years site experience. Consideration may be given to exceptional graduates.
- Consideration will also be given to a material engineer with a strong background and extensive experience in site earthworks, materials testing and quality control.
- Ideally, you’ll have experience of using digital systems such as Dalux to support quality and completion records for the project.
- Knowledge of soil mechanics, geotechnical data and construction standards is desirable.
- You’ll have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be proactive and a collaborative team worker.
- The position is a site-based role.
About our project…
The construction of the Chiltern tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct are two of the most eye-catching and challenging engineering projects on the HS2 route. Align is the joint venture created to achieve this task – we’ve created one integrated team of specialists from three partners with global reputations: Bouygues Travaux Publics, VolkerFitzpatrick and Sir Robert McAlpine.
The C1 Package includes the following elements:
- The now completed iconic Colne Valley; 3+ km long and spanning the lakes of the Colne Valley.
- The now completed Chiltern Tunnels – 2 x 16km long tunnels through the Chiltern Hills.
- Western Valley Slopes (South Portal) – 2.5km of earthworks including the TBM launching portal and main compound in Maple Cross housing the TBM plant and equipment, main offices and tunnel/viaduct pre cast yards.
- 5 x Ventilation Shafts at Chalfont St. Peter, Chalfont St. Giles, Amersham, Little Missenden and Chesham. Shaft depth between 35m-65m with diaphragm walls up to 80m deep.
- South Heath Cutting – 2.4km of earthworks including bridges, roads and drainage basins.
