HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire. Location Based at Fort Dunlop – this location sits on the eastern edge of Birmingham, adjacent to the M6 motorway, providing excellent transport links into the city and across the region. Fort Dunlop serves as a key hub within IPT Area North, supporting operations that span multiple sublots.
Role Responsibilities
- Assist in delivering surface water quality and flow monitoring programmes, undertaking consent- and permit-required monitoring activities and providing accurate data and results to the Core Team Water Specialist and Environmental Core Team Technical Leads.
- Collect, manage, and process environmental data and samples, including operation, inspection, calibration, and maintenance of monitoring and safety equipment; collection and preparation of samples for laboratory analysis; and inspection of stilling wells and data loggers with timely reporting of issues.
- Manage environmental records and reporting, maintaining registers, minutes, and databases; entering and analysing monitoring data; and assisting with preparation of field reports, annual reports, and draft staff reports.
- Ensure full compliance with site procedures, safety protocols, and approved methodologies, working to defined monitoring, data transfer, and data input requirements at all times.
- Promote environmental awareness and stakeholder engagement, supporting training, briefings, toolbox talks, and communications, and participating in meetings where environmental issues are discussed with project teams and specialists.
- Physically capable and site-ready, able to swim and commit to in-water safety training, with experience working on construction sites and flexibility to work across multiple locations with a full driving licence.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving and effective engagement with site teams and specialists.
- Highly organised and results-driven, demonstrating determination to see tasks through to completion with excellent planning and time-management skills.
- Technically competent in water and environmental monitoring, with a good understanding of water monitoring techniques, environmental legislation, and environmental management systems to support compliance.
- Digitally and professionally proficient, with good IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), experience on large-scale infrastructure projects, and membership of a relevant environmental professional body.
