HS2, Britain’s new high-speed railway is at peak construction. Balfour Beatty VINCI is HS2’s construction partner in the Midlands, responsible for delivering 90km of the route, from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire. Location Based in Birmingham - the Central Region runs from the east of Birmingham into the city centre, comprising Sublot Delta, 1B, 4 and 5S. More than 50% of the structures within IPT Area North are located in the Central Region. This region, which covers a complex urban environment, also includes the 3.5 mile twin bore Bromford Tunnel. It also includes Interchange Station, as well as crossing three major highways (A45, M6 and M42).
Responsible for delivering the permanent works design for the Central East Region, covering Sublot Delta and Sublot SL5S, including associated assets. Accountable for managing the permanent works design delivery of those assets. Ensuring CDM duties are fulfilled by designers & others. Ensuring the design meets the HS2 Environmental Minimum Requirements, including requirements for environmental mitigation. Ensuring the design is compliant with the Works Information (CRT, Technical Standards etc.). Ensuring the permanent works design is coordinated with the temporary works design. Coordinating the management of technical interfaces between construction, various design offices, the supply chain design inputs, the design checker and all parties included in the design including stakeholders such as National Highways and Network Rail. Communication of design & CDM risks to the relevant site teams. This will involve engagement with the site teams through site visits etc. Administration of the contract with HS2 and the supply chain, alongside the design manager and on topics relating to the design. This will involve for example drafting contractual communications (early warnings, instructions etc.). Management of the design & construction programme integration. Support to the construction team in the delivery of construction assurance deliverables (SAP construction & hand back).
Key Requirements and Experience
- Qualified Civil Engineer or similar equivalent, with multi‑disciplinary breadth.
- Good communication skills and highly organised with good management and coordination skills.
- Experience of working with a major design consultancy.
- Experience & understanding of the HS2 technical assurance processes.
- Previous experience in a design function, preferably within major infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations and, in particular, Designer and Principal Designer duties.
- Ability to own and deliver packages of work to the required quality to achieve the required outcome.
- Ability to build relationships across the Integrated Project Team (HS2, BBV & DJV).
